Federer still undefeated

LONDON -- The 'Ooohs' and 'Aaahs' from an appreciative crowd began during warmups, when Roger Federer volleyed one ball through his legs.

His artistry grew more impressive once play began for real.

Facing the last man to defeat him on grass, three-time Wimbledon champion Federer quickly turned the Centre Court rematch into a mismatch, beating No. 7-seeded Mario Ancic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 yesterday to reach the semifinals.

If the score was routine, Federer's play was anything but. Some shots were so sublime that even the Swiss star was taken aback.

"I definitely had a period where it was so good, it was just incredible," said Federer, bidding to become the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1976 to win Wimbledon without dropping a set. "You're not afraid to try anything, you're not afraid to hit the ball hard, you're not afraid to go for aces.

Itinerary for week of July 9

Take the A train to the Middle Ages. The New York subway takes visitors to the Cloisters, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's medieval outpost in northern Manhattan. This complex of early European architecture includes parts of five cloisters seamlessly assembled to house other works of art. Stone terraces and gardens offer spectacular views.

New for summer visitors is a cafe where you can sip cappuccino sitting under the arches beside flower-filled courtyards. Recent renovations also include newly installed stained-glass windows. The museum now offers an audio guide, a lightweight, palm-sized MP3 player with tours in English, French or Spanish.

But the museum is best-known for something from the 15th century rather than the 21st — the world-famous Unicorn Tapestries, seven woven wall hangings that depict the hunt for a unicorn through luxuriant forests thronged with courtiers, knights and ladies.

DESERVED SUCCESS FOR KANDIDATE

Kandidate has not quite lived up to the promise he showed when third in last year's 2000 Guineas behind Footstepsinthesand as a 100-1 chance.

But Clive Brittain's well-travelled colt is still useful and showed it as he arrived late on the scene to collar Windsor Knot in the Seymour Pierce Gala Stakes at Sandown.

Seb Sanders excelled on the 9-1 winner who settled before quickening impressively up the hill to score by two and a half lengths.

"He thrived in Dubai but isn't always the easiest to catch right," observed Brittain's travelling head groom Des Reape. "He's a big, strong horse and a Christian at home."

Bahama Mama advertised the strength in depth of Jeremy Noseda's two-year-olds with a gutsy success in the Smith & Williamson Dragon Stakes.

Eye of the storm

PERHAPS the most dangerous stunt Johnny Depp, as Captain Jack Sparrow, performed in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was eluding hurricanes during the treacherous tropical storm season in the Bahamas.

"We were evacuated on a daily basis," he reveals. "There was a daily monitoring of the National Hurricane Centre when we were down there in Grand Bahamas.

"You would be watching them closely and you'd see them turn and there were memories of what happened during Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi."

Shooting Dead Man's Chest – the third Pirates instalment set for release next year – back-to-back in the Bahamas and West Indies with a combined budget of $300 million, involved more than 600 people.

"It was really strange," Depp says, "sitting there with (director) Gore Verbinski and (producer) Jerry Bruckheimer and the rest of the producers, watching for the storm.

"Gunshots were fired in the vicinity of the store [and] one of the alleged robbers was shot in the process."

The suspect, whose identity had not been released up to press time, succumbed to his injuries around 3 pm on Friday. Police are continuing their investigations into the matter.

The unexpected... and then some

Expect the unexpected, Calvary Temple youth leaders and organisers of its annual Youth Summit dare the public.

And they've got four nights to deliver on their sky-scraping promise. The youth summit rolls around again for the 10th time this year with a roll call of speakers and entertainers who are known around the country.

The summit waves the banner of "Exodus: We Are Breaking Free," this year. Calvary Youth Pastor, Duerre Thomas and bandanna-wearing youth leader, Bruce Russell, say that they've given the youth affair a 'Matrix' (of wildly successful movie trilogy fame) twist.

"We want (young people) to know that God wants them to be free in every area of their lives," Thomas asserted. "Free from depression, free from suicidal thoughts, any type of immorality, free from drugs- anything that may have them stifled in life," he added.
