Oil spill fears

A privately owned 110-foot steel hull tugboat, 'The Carrizal', caught fire at about 3:30 a.m. June 26, at Arawak Cay and sank four miles north of Paradise Island in 1,000 feet of water where it was towed by the owner Edgar Curling. No injuries were reported.

According to Mr Curling, the vessel contained 200 gal of diesel fuel in its tank when it caught on fire at Arawak Cay.

The Fire Department was called. They battled the fire for three hours before a decision was made to tow the vessel away from the docks to avoid additional damage to surrounding vessels. In what was called a controlled burn, the vessel eventually sank at 9:42 a.m.

The Ministry of Transport and Aviation, the lead agency for Oil Spill on the seas was informed at about 9:15 a.m.

Report due on cave bones bones

A report officially confirming whether bones found at Eleuthera's Preacher's Cave are the centuries old remains of a Lucayan Indian and an Eleutheran Adventurer is expected to be issued in August.

In March, a team of Miami-Dade archaeologists discovered what is believed to be the 500-year-old skeletal remains of a Lucayan Indian lying inches away from the remains of a 350-year-old Eleutheran Adventurer just 150 meters beneath the cave's floor.

Jeff Ransom, a Miami-Dade archaeologist who, was present at the Preacher's Cave dig, told The Guardian yesterday, "A report concerning our excavations and the analysis of human remains at Preacher's Cave will be coming out soon, maybe by the end of August 2006." Just days after the ancient skeletal remains were unearthed, the Bahamian government said that it hoped to transform the world-renowned cave into a national preservation park.

The Relax-and-Enjoy Thing

"Is this a bad time?" I was feeling a little awkward invading the privacy of other boats, so it was important to approach on a polite tack, I figured.

"Is there such a thing as a bad time?" answered an elderly gent, who stopped buttoning up a mainsail cover aboard Polaris to chat with me. Polaris is a Passport 40 he'd helped his compadre sail from Puerto Rico to Trellis Bay, Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands. He grabbed the painter of the dinghy that held my partner, Captain Rick Martell, and me, and brought us alongside.

His-question-with-a-question comeback, the twinkle in his eye, and the smile all over his sunscreen-smeared face made me fall in love all over again with everyone and everything Virgin Islands, where Rick and I had cruised and worked as charter crew in the 1990s.

Lovers of living on the edge

Widespread Panic percussionist Domingo "Sunny" Ortiz says one of the requirements for being in the band is to enjoy a big element of musical unpredictability.

"We like living on the edge," Ortiz said in a recent phone interview.

"I think that was one of the requirements of joining the band, that you wanted to live on the edge. And it's still a barrel of fun for all of us."

Ortiz has certainly seen that outlook play out night after night on stage, where the band changes sets nightly and is known for jams that take songs to new and unexpected places on a regular basis.

With the band's new CD, "Earth To America," Widespread Panic more than ever also took the notion of living on the edge into the studio.

For the first time after eight previous studio albums, the band left its home base of Athens, Ga., for recording and went to Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas to record "Earth To America."

The group also took a break from working with longtime producer John Keane to work with Terry Manning on the CD.
