bahamas beachesBahama Islands News, Articles and InformationBand doesn't panic over major changesMany factors can make or break a band -- ego, infighting, tour lag -- so it's no surprise that Widespread Panic's 20-year career can be chalked up to one simple rule: Take things day by day.For lead singer John Bell, that mantra is a way of life. While he tries to envision the future of Widespread Panic, he really only wants to look as far as what's right in front of him. He's done that for the band's entire existence. "If you get too far ahead of yourself, it's an opportunity to sabotage things," Bell said by phone while lazing about his Georgia home. "If you're looking toward the future, you're not looking at the here and now." Over the last two decades, the Athens, Ga.-based sextet has barely stopped to catch their collective breath, save a 15-month hiatus following the 2002 death of founding member Michael "Panic" Houser, for whom the band is named.
Animals could be deafened by testsSeismic tests proposed for B.C. next year as part of a research project to determine the origins of the earth's crust could deafen whales and dolphins in the area and even cause them to ground themselves, scientists opposed to the project say.The tests, which will be conducted on the central coast between the Skeena River and Burke Channel by a panel of 16 Canadian and U.S. scientists, are part of a multi-year project investigating the processes that generate continental crust. Many scientists believe that the production of batholiths -- large zones of molten rock that solidified in the crust -- played a key role in the formation and growth of continents. The seismic tests, which are proposed for three weeks in September and October of 2007, are needed, scientists say, to get a more accurate geological picture of the area.
Vacations on our minds"Aruba, Jamaica, oo I wanna take ya; Bermuda, Bahamas, come on pretty mama; Key Largo, Montego, baby, why don't we go? Off the Florida Keys. ...."Too many consecutive days behind a desk or a counter will have you humming something like this Beach Boys tune and clicking on those "5 hot vacations" hits online when you're supposed to be working.Despite the increase in gasoline prices this year, residents of the T&D Region are not skipping their vacations, according to Travel Center co-owner Charlie Underwood. A vacation is something they are not going to deny themselves; they've saved for it and they are going to take it.Underwood says cruises are still the most popular vacation destination for their customers: "the Bahamas for the shorter cruises, Jamaica for the longer cruises."In addition to exotic destinations and endless quantities of food, the attraction of a cruise may lie in the fact that theme cruises from NASCAR to baseball, and seminar cruises, such as historical or financial planning, are being offered, particularly by the Cunard line.Bajan takes up CHA presidencyMIAMI, Florida – Peter Odle, owner and managing director of the 76-room Mango Bay Hotel in Barbados, assumed the leadership of the Caribbean Hotel Association as President for the 2006-2008 term. During the closing gala of the 2006 Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC), held 28 June, at the Hyatt Regency Miami, outgoing President Berthia Parle, MBE, officially passed the gavel to Odle. In his inaugural speech at the helm of CHA, Odle summed up the essence of his platform as ‘Unity through Consultation and Communication'. “It is clear to me that one of the first steps is that we do all that is necessary to be a more effective leader in regional tourism while strengthening our relationships with other Caribbean tourism partners. Of equal importance, we must also become more responsive to the needs of our members," he said, underscoring the importance of upholding and advancing the diversity and representation that is the core of CHA.
