Navratilova's tally: 20 Wimbledon titles

WIMBLEDON, England — Martina Navratilova ended her Wimbledon career Thursday still tied with Billie Jean King for the most All England Club titles with 20.

Navratilova and Liezel Huber of South Africa lost their quarterfinal doubles match 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 to the Chinese pair of Yan Zi and Zheng Jie, who won the Australian Open title this year.

In the third round of mixed doubles, Navratilova and Mark Knowles of the Bahamas lost 7-5, 6-1 to Andy Ram of Israel and Vera Zvonareva of Russia.

The 49-year-old Navratilova, who will retire from all play at the end of this year, has nine singles, seven doubles and four mixed doubles titles at Wimbledon. King won six singles, 10 doubles and four mixed.

One reason Navratilova has continued so long was a desire to hold the record on her own.

BHCAWU elections

The Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union should not be left to languish for too much longer without a person being in charge, who can definitively lay claim to the presidency. If that state of affairs were allowed to continue, it could eventually lead to chaos and a breakdown in the orderliness of the union's business.

The general election for the officers three weeks ago ended in a tie vote for the leadership and up to now new date has been set for a runoff to determine conclusively who the president should be.

The incumbent president, Pat Bain, is in a tenuous position having lost his executive slate, except for the general secretary, and the other elected officials have categorically stated that they want him gone.

Technically, Mr Bain is still the president as he did not lose the position, but he will forever be between the proverbial rock and hard place when it comes to getting his programmes moving.

Trying to get some respect

With Father's Day only a couple of days away, consumers are getting ready to celebrate Dad through neckties, barbecue grills and power drills.

"We try to make it special for him, don't we?" Diane Weymon said to her granddaughter Alexandria Tuesday afternoon while shopping for gifts at the McKinley Kmart in Mishawaka.

Trinidad to get its First 'Hindu' Radio Station

Pot of Spain, July 7: After several years of legal battles at different levels, Trinidad and Tobago will get its first 'Hindu' radio station.

The move comes after the British Privy Council ordered the government to give the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) led by Satnarayan Maharaj a radio licence "forthwith."

The Law Lords ruled that "an appropriate frequency to be agreed with by the Central Broadcasting Services (CBS) Ltd, or in default of agreement, to be determined by the High Court."

The state was also ordered to pay the SDMS costs of brining its appeal to the Privy Council and those incurred.

The station will be the first radio facility "promoting" Hinduism in the Caribbean nation, which has a population of over 300,000 Hindus.

Miami Nice

When Naomie Harris and I arrive at the London restaurant she's designated as our interview venue, we find the place shuttered. Harris's mouth forms a small 'o' of dismay, then immediately brightens. 'Let's try the place across the road,' she suggests. As we sit down at an alfresco table, fans draped in St George's flags are spilling out of an adjacent pub that's showing an England World Cup game. 'Oh, is there football on?' asks Harris airily, before going on to discuss her life and career as an actress, serenely unmoved by the roars and shrieks that periodically overwhelm her soft voice, and my tape machine.

There could be no starker indication of the twin strands of Harris's character, namely artlessness and single-mindedness. As she frets over what to order ('What are langoustines?' she asks the waiter, before opting for the spaghetti-with-langoustines without the langoustines) there's an air of unworldliness about her.

A season of 'fresh' dining begins

Seasons 52, a dining concept by one of the largest restaurateurs in the United States, is about to make a noticeable entrance into the Atlanta market, with two high-profile locations.

By fall, a Seasons 52 will open at Two Buckhead Plaza, a new building next to Buckhead Life Restaurant Group Inc.'s Nava in the Buckhead Village. And another restaurant will debut across from the hotel W Atlanta at Perimeter Center.

Fredericksburg, sideways

FREDERICKSBURG -- So, is this capital of the Texas Hill Country the next Yountville? Roll your eyes all you want, but the comparison between the Hill Country and Napa Valley has been suggested by no less than Southern Living magazine and CNN.com in recent months.

If the cynics among you haven't been here recently, surprises are in store. Yes, the deep German influence of the founders still prevails, but there's more to this town than the sausage-beer-knickknack stop of a decade ago. It's still a handy romantic getaway with more than 350 bed-and-breakfasts, but the signature "country-cute" appeal is a fading memory, replaced by a new sophistication.

You'll find a real wine country with gracious dining to satisfy discerning palates, as well as galleries and shopping to compare with more urbane settings.
