The Tribute longs for ‘Yesterday’

When Mark Benson and his Akron, Ohio, band went into the music studio to record original material in 1984, he said they added some Beatles songs, thinking it would be a "good on-the-side thing" appealing to baby boomers.

Two years later, the popularity of the Beatles' songs turned the childhood friends into a full-time tribute band, Benson said.

"All of us were very surprised," he said.

More than 20 years later, 1964 … The Tribute performs about 140 shows each year and will play at the Meijer Event Pavilion at 7 p.m. Saturday. Herman's Hermits will perform after The Tribute.

The Tribute performs all over – within the past two years, their tour included stops in the United States, England, Canada and the Bahamas.

For the 10th Year in a Row, Australia Is Top Choice for a Vacation Destination, if Cost Is Not an Option, According to

As summer officially begins this week, according to a new survey, just over half (54%) of U.S. adults say they have taken or will take a vacation this summer. For many, their summer vacations will consist of visiting family and friends while others will go to the beach or take a scenic trip. U.S. adults were again more likely to say that if they could spend a vacation in any country in the world, outside the United States, and not have to worry about the cost, Australia would be their choice. Rounding out the top five vacation destination choices for U.S. adults are Italy (No. 2), Great Britain (No. 3), Ireland (No. 4) and France (No. 5).

These are the results of a nationwide Harris Poll of 2,351 U.S. adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive(R) between June 7 and 13, 2006.

July 5 (Bloomberg) -- Roger Federer overcame Mario Ancic and two rain delays at Wimbledon to reach his ninth straight Grand Slam tennis semifinal. He'll face Jonas Bjorkman, who saved a match point to become the oldest men's semifinalist in 19 years.

Marcos Baghdatis, the Cypriot runner-up to Federer at January's Australian Open, also reached the final four by beating 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

Federer, the top seed from Switzerland and aiming for his fourth straight championship, beat the seventh-seeded Ancic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to extend his record winning streak on grass to 46 matches, a string that began after a loss to the Croatian four years ago. Oil spill fears

A privately owned 110-foot steel hull tugboat, 'The Carrizal', caught fire at about 3:30 a.m. June 26, at Arawak Cay and sank four miles north of Paradise Island in 1,000 feet of water where it was towed by the owner Edgar Curling. No injuries were reported.

According to Mr Curling, the vessel contained 200 gal of diesel fuel in its tank when it caught on fire at Arawak Cay.

The Fire Department was called. They battled the fire for three hours before a decision was made to tow the vessel away from the docks to avoid additional damage to surrounding vessels. In what was called a controlled burn, the vessel eventually sank at 9:42 a.m.

The Ministry of Transport and Aviation, the lead agency for Oil Spill on the seas was informed at about 9:15 a.m.

Late artist's DVD hits the market

The Central Bank of The Bahamas yesterday held an exhibition to launch a commemoration package for late Bahamian female artist Kristin Penn-Davis. The life and works of the pop/culture music icon has been compiled on a DVD, allowing those who want to hold onto Kristin a while longer to do so.

"We launched a musical work by Kristin and a DVD documenting some of her history," said Frank Penn, Kristin's father and former producer. "This evening's launch of Kristin's musical works along with the photographs and media display, highlighting some of her history, is probably the latest production that I will put together, (in) presenting and sharing Kristin with the public. We just wanted to remember her and we are doing it this way. This is her personal and music history and hopefully, her number of fans will seize the moment and get a moment of her life to share with family and friends abroad.

Hotels rebounding after outbreak of malaria

NASSAU – Two weeks after the discovery of malaria on the island of Great Exuma, hotel operators say occupancy numbers are holding despite a slight fall off.

Antoine Chahwan, general manager of the Four Seasons Resort said, "We're very encouraged and happy with the good news, but we're going to have to wait and see how the rest of the world reacts." For the resort, success will be measured by how guests react to the news and if they continue to travel there.

At this point, he said, occupancy is at about 75 percent with the hope that those figures hold.

On the issue of how well the crisis was managed, Chahwan said, "The communication lines were open from day one. We chose to be forthcoming in choosing to tell our guests prior to arrival in Exuma, which will always buy goodwill for the future."

He admitted that some people may have some apprehension about coming right now, "but in the long term plans, they will always depend on the honesty and the level of communication that they see from Four Seasons and The Bahamas in general."

Similar sentiments were voiced by Chuck Roberts, manager of Palm Bay Beach Club.
