Ready, set, go! GB junior athletes ready for Junior CAC ...

Nivea Smith and Ryan Penn will lead the Grand Bahama contingent of the junior athletes that are representing The Bahamas at the Junior CAC Championships next week in Trinidad and Tobago.

Smith and Penn will be joined by Shelleyka Rolle, Carlene Johnson, Raymond Higgs, Anjoun Armaly, Darion Duncombe, Tradecio Davis, Juan Lewis, Charles Williams and Johnaton Davis.

Travelling with the team will be assistant coach Caudel McNab and chaperone Angela Rolle.

"This is a very disciplined group and they are expected to do well," said McNab yesterday during a press briefing at the Grand Bahama Sports Complex.

"We expect them to perform to the best of their ability and to stay healthy," added McNab, who noted that usually this is one of the major concerns when athletes travel.

Immigration reform faces a long, hot summer

WASHINGTON -- The immigration reform debate will sizzle this summer. Whether it produces anything besides heat is another question.

Business and labor lobbyists are mobilizing. Lawmakers are maneuvering, onstage and off. Congressional hearings are convening, potentially including one in California's Central Valley.

Some of the action will be public, like a July 5 House hearing in San Diego, Calif. There's nothing subtle about these hearings, starting with one titled "Border Vulnerabilities and International Terrorism." The hearings will continue through August, spinning the debate in one direction. .

HR boss gives job tips to graduates

Selvin Basden, Human Resources Director for Baha Mar's Cable Beach Resort and a guest on a segment of Monday's Bahamas @ Sunrise gave tips to new college graduates on what to look for and how to act on a job interview.

Basden said that it was better to have a one page resumé than try to over-sell themselves with a resumé of four pages.

He said it was important to dress appropriately in business attire when going on an interview and that one should not try to over-analyze a question asked, but rather answer it "appropriately and to the point."

One of the most important tips Mr Basden gave is not to feel discouraged if a perspective employer does not call them right back after an interview.

This could be because of the high volume of applications being processed.

It's regatta time again

With the Annual Grand Bahama Regatta scheduled to begin on Thursday, June 22 organizers announced yesterday that they have solid confirmation from three 'A' Class boats.

Those vessels are the Lucayan Lady, the Red Stripe and the Thunder Bird.

According to chairman of the committee Carnard Bethel, the required number of boats needed to participate in the regatta is given to the three sailing associations.

"The associations then determine which boats will appear in the regatta."

Bethel noted that sometimes the list of boats competing in the regatta is not confirmed until when the barge bringing the boats to Grand Bahama is ready to leave Nassau.

"The barge bringing the boats to the GB Regatta is scheduled to leave Nassau on Thursday evening and certainly by then, we will know the names of the boats that is coming," he added.

Jackson Memorial Hospital reaches out to affluent patients to close budget gap

MIAMI -- Drifting in and out of reality, Trevor Rolle was growing worse with an undiagnosed illness at a Bahamas hospital when his insurer offered a new option: He could be transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

Though relieved, his big brother steeled himself for another agonizing wait. He knew there would be a zillion details to work out. So Conray Rolle was amazed when he was told that an air ambulance would pick up his brother the next day.

Chappelle, Pee-wee return to tube

Dave Chappelle is finally returning with new episodes of "Chappelle's Show" - well, sort of.

An audience has never seen these episodes, which will premiere 9 p.m. Sunday on Comedy Central. This actually is work that Chappelle completed before walking away from the series nearly two years ago.

Comedy Central says he left enough behind to make up six new episodes. Chappelle has said he doesn't want them to air.

But the cable channel, which drew some of its biggest audiences with "Chappelle's Show," obviously has a different opinion. So these sketches are being dubbed as "lost" episodes.

Chappelle will be seen only in the sketches. "Chappelle" contributors such as Charlie Murphy and Neal Brennan will stand in for Chappelle during the introductions and exits.

The material is telling of Chappelle's state of mind before he left.

1973: Bahamas' sun sets on British Empire

He hosted a formal reception at Government House, Nassau, last night for dignitaries from 52 countries overseeing the end of over 300 years of British sovereignty.

As the Queen's representative, Prince Charles arrived yesterday on the frigate Minerva, on which he is serving.

Just before midnight tonight (0400 GMT) he will witness the final lowering of the Union Jack on hills overlooking Nassau harbour in a ceremony to be replicated on all 22 of the inhabited Bahamian islands.

Before that, the Prince is completing a packed schedule of official engagements.

He has also found time to captain the Nassau polo team in a match against Freeport on Grand Bahama. His team lost 5-6 in spite of his polished performance.

Moves towards independence

Britain welcomed Bahamian independence when the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) won the election on that platform in September 1972.
