Hot & mostly dry once again today

FORT MYERS: Today will look and feel a lot like it did yesterday, with sunny to partly cloudy skies, highs in the lower 90s and isolated thunderstorm activity late day.

We are keeping an eye on area of disturbed weather just northeast of the Bahamas. This upper level low had changed very little during the overnight, but environmental conditions are forecast to become a bit more favorable for development as we head into the weekend.

There are currently two scenarios with this system:
1) It backs near the east coast of the U.S. and then heads north spreading rain across the Northeast
2) It slowly drifts west and pushes inland in the northern portion of the state.

If scenario #2 unfolds, it would mean deeper tropical moisture would arrive and that would translate into better rain chances for us.

Bahamas malaria outbreak causes concern

A case of malaria which has cropped up in the Bahamas has caused concern and raised many questions for health officials and has worried local residents.

Health officials are currently screening illegal immigrants for malaria after the outbreak of the potentially fatal disease was confirmed on the Exuma islands, a sandy chain of islands southeast of Nassau.

Malaria has not been endemic in the Bahamas and apart from what are termed "sporadic" cases by the health ministry, almost all cases have been imported into the country.

The Exuma islands harbour reclusive holiday retreats belonging to wealthy Europeans, Canadians and Americans and it was here that a dozen cases of the disease have been confirmed.

According to health officials three of the patients were Haitians, one was Uruguayan, and the rest were all believed to be Bahamians.

Hodder promises honesty

After a complete year of tension and controversy surrounding the presidential office at The College of The Bahamas, the institution's chief is saying that truth and integrity will be the foundation of the future university's presence.

Janyne Hodder, newly appointed COB president said that she is not on a crusade to win the hearts of the public through the media but rather she wishes to display the honest truth of what is being done at COB.

"I'm actually not terribly fond of talking about image, I like to talk about truth and I think the way you will do that is by doing good work. Its not about spin, it's about work," Ms. Hodder said.

"There are people here who come everyday in service to the nation, that's the story we need to tell," she added.
