Eastern and Western head coaches selected the players who will round out the 2006 WNBA All-Star teams. The game will showcase the league's stars ranging from savvy veterans like the Los Angeles Sparks' Lisa Leslie, Detroit's Katie Smith and Phoenix's Diana Taurasi to the All-Star debuts of three rookies, Minnesota's Seimone Augustus, Phoenix's Cappie Pondexter and San Antonio's Sophia Young. Geiger-HamlenRandall Memorial Baptist Church, Williamsville, was the setting at 3 p.m. Saturday for the wedding of Rebecca A. Geiger and Kevin W. Hamlen. The Rev. David Jones of Bethel Grove Bible Church, Ithaca, heard their vows, prior to a reception at the church. Parents of the bride are Loren D. and Elaine S. Geiger of Lancaster and the bridegroom is the son of William A. and Susan M. Hamlen of East Amherst. The bride is a violin teacher for Fayetteville-Manlius School District, Manlius. She graduated from Lancaster High School and Eastman School of Music, and has a master's degree in violin performance from Ithaca College. The bridegroom is assistant professor of computer science for University of Texas at Dallas. The Nassau Guardian took to the streets yesterday to find out what jobs Bahamians are shying away from, but still don't want the immigrants to have. "I don't think I could ever be a maid," 21-year-old Sophia said. "I just can't see myself in somebody's house, or hotel, cleaning what another person left behind.
Bahamas to host volleyball clash as Bajans opt outNASSAU, Bahamas The Bahamas Volleyball Federation (BVH) is stepping in to host the 11th Caribbean Volleyball Championship (CVC) this summer after Barbados were forced to decline staging the competition.The unavailability of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex foiled the Barbados bid to stage CVC 2006, and the event set for August 20-27 has now been shifted to New Providence, Bahamas. It is hoped that 12 countries will field men's and women's teams, including The Bahamas and defending champions Barbados. Other invited countries are Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Cayman Islands, St Lucia, Martinique, the United States Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Aruba, and the Netherlands Antilles. At a press conference Monday to announce the country's hosting of the championship, the BVF president Don Cornish said it was crucial to step in as hosts of the CVC held every two years in order to maintain the integrity of the sport in the Caribbean.
Bahamas team at XVI CISCThe Bahamas Swimming Federation's 24 member swim team to the XVI Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships in Salinas, Puerto Rico are in place and ready to compete.The championships will run through Friday, and the Bahamian squad is being led by Nikia Deveaux, who will compete in several events in-cluding her specialty the 50 freestyle in the 18 and over age group. The other female swimmers include Je'nae Saunders, Bria Deveaux, Shante Moss, Shalyla Campbell in the 12 and under age group, Kadesha Culmer, Ashley Butler, Anthaya Rolle and Ariel Weech in the 13 and 14 age group, Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace, Alicia Lightbourne, Jenna Chaplin and Teisha Lightbourne in the 15 to 17 age group and Alana Dillette in the 18 and over age group. The male swimmers on the squad include Mathew Lowe, Evante Gibson, Devonn Kno-wles, Mancer Roberts and Delano McIntosh in the 11 and 12 age group, John Bradley in the 13 and 14 age group, Vereance Burrows, Ashton Knowles and Je'vaughan Saunders in the 15 to 17 age group and Inoa Charlton in the 18 and over age group.

If he plays his cards right, he could beat out five other students from around the country and win a year's worth of college tuition. "It's really not a question; I'm going to win the thing," said Wood. The finalists have already played a mock match online which Wood won. "I'm much, much better in person," he said. Wood got into gambling at a young age. He and a friend began betting against each other in pool and eventually moved on to other games like basketball.
Vereance sets CISC recordThe Bahamian team to the 15th Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships is on a mission, and Grand Bahamian Vereance Burrows proved it.In his first swim on the competition's opening day on Monday night, 16-year-old Burrows turned in a record-setting swim in the 15-17 Boys 50 metres butterfly in a time of 25.39 seconds, in Salinas, Puerto Rico. Burrows erased the previous meet record of 25.87 seconds set by Barbadian Shawn Clarke in 2004. Burrows' CISC record didn't come without a fight though. He edged hometown favourite Juan Serrano at the wall. Serrano touched in 25.72 seconds and finishing third was Jamaican Brad Hamilton(26.28 seconds). Bahamas Swim Federation president Algernon Cargill, who is with the 24-member team, said that Burrows' performance was no suprise.
