Malaria Risk Reported on One of the Bahamas

Hurricanes aren't the only thing vacationers have to worry about this summer. After a malaria outbreak last month on Great Exuma Island in the Bahamas, travelers are being advised to take precautions against the mosquito-borne threat.

At least 16 people have tested positive for the potentially fatal disease since the first case was reported early last month, according to an update issued by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, which is maintaining close contact with the Bahamas Ministry of Health regarding the outbreak. Most of the people who were infected were Bahamas residents; one was a United States citizen who traveled there in May. The Bahamas has responded with intense surveillance and mosquito control measures on Great Exuma, above, including repeated spraying of the airport area.

Fred Michell slams media

A second senior PLP politician has slammed the print media for lacking "balance and fairness." Fred Mitchell, the Foreign Affairs minister, echoed the views of PLP Party Chairman Raynard Rigby, when he accused The Nassau Guardian, The Tribune and The Bahama Journal of twisting information with inaccurate reporting.

"The three newspapers of record that publish on a daily basis have a responsibility for balance (and) fairness. I don't talk about objectivity, because I don't think that is really possible because each reporter has his own view," said Mitchell. "But when I talk about balance and fairness and to be correct and true, that's all we can ask. Your editorial position is your own editorial position, but don't go and twist and turn information to suit your party political biases and propaganda." The media was verbally attacked in April by Mr Rigby for its political coverage.

A suspect, who was shot while carrying out a daring daytime robbery attempt yesterday morning, died just hours after the crime.

According to Reginald Ferguson, assistant commissioner of police with responsibility for crime, the fatal shooting took place after the male suspect along with two others attempted to hold-up CLT Communications on East Street. "Gunshots were fired in the vicinity of the store [and] one of the alleged robbers was shot in the process."

The suspect, whose identity had not been released up to press time, succumbed to his injuries around 3 pm on Friday. Police are continuing their investigations into the matter.

In other crime news a group of United States visitors was robbed at knifepoint early yesterday morning – four days after two tourists were held up just four miles away.

Resources to be protected

The government has undertaken an aggressive initiative to crackdown on persons who are over fishing in Bahamian waters, in order to sustain the country's marine resources.

In his 2006/07 Budget communication to Parliament on Monday, Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, Leslie Miller, announced changes to fishers' catch limits, as his ministry takes vital steps towards ensuring the safety and preservation of marine life. He added that foreigners who fish in Bahamian waters without permission and those who take advantage of their license, are increasingly threatening the sustainability of fishery resources.

"Fishing by visitors is to be for sporting purposes, not as an opportunity to finance a vacation, sell for profit or fill the freezers at home," he said.
