Bahamas malaria outbreak causes concernA case of malaria which has cropped up in the Bahamas has caused concern and raised many questions for health officials and has worried local residents.Health officials are currently screening illegal immigrants for malaria after the outbreak of the potentially fatal disease was confirmed on the Exuma islands, a sandy chain of islands southeast of Nassau. Malaria has not been endemic in the Bahamas and apart from what are termed "sporadic" cases by the health ministry, almost all cases have been imported into the country. The Exuma islands harbour reclusive holiday retreats belonging to wealthy Europeans, Canadians and Americans and it was here that a dozen cases of the disease have been confirmed. According to health officials three of the patients were Haitians, one was Uruguayan, and the rest were all believed to be Bahamians.
Monday July 10, 2006 - 17:31 ESTBILOXI, Mississippi AND GRAND BAHAMA -- As reported by the Freeport News: "Executives of the Isle of Capri corporate office in Biloxi, Mississippi, have announced that a year from now, they will cease operations in Grand Bahama."Jill Haynes, director of Corporate Communication, said the purpose for terminating operations on June 1, 2007 is to enable the company to focus more on its core properties in the United States. "In a telephone interview with The Freeport News, Ms. Haynes disclosed that when the casino closes next year, employees will be entitled to severance pay as governed by the company's normal separation policy or termination of workers. "...Ms. Haynes was quick to point out that Hurricane Katrina had no bearing on the company's decision to close the casino "...In July of last year, a drastic decrease in the net profit between the 2004 and 2005 fiscal year at the Isle of Capri Casino resulted in the casino making the "tough decision" of having to downsize its staff by 13 percent.
Hurricane season cruisingYear-round Caribbean cruising's on an upswing as lines ranging from Princess to Carnival are keeping some of their biggest and splashiest ships sailing in the region throughout summer and fall. And yet, aside from experiencing slightly steamier tropical weather than in winter months, cruising the Caribbean during the summer and fall otherwise comes with one pretty big caveat: Hurricane season can wreak havoc on your vacation. In 1998, Windjammer's Fantome, which deposited passengers safely on land before it sailed out to sea to avoid an off-the-charts violent hurricane, tragically lost its ship and crew. One year later, Carnival's Tropicale lost power as it was sailing out of the way of another storm (though no lives were lost). Disaster stories like these are the exception rather than the rule, but if you're planning a Caribbean cruise from June through November, it pays to be aware of the possibilities.
Jane's World of CraftAfter many years of faithful service in the Cayman Islands Postal Service, Jane Webster decided to keep busy during her retirement, by making marvelously imaginative craft ornaments. The range of her work is as wide as her imagination, and Ms Webster makes virtually anything out of virtually anything. "I started in Summer 2002. I was operating a pre-school and during the summer some of the parents asked me if I could take some older children during the summer vacation. I had to find something for them to do, so I went to the craft store and bought some craft materials. "When it was time for them to go back to school, at the end of the summer, I thought it was time to do something myself. "The first thing I did was a bunch of grapes out of purple beads; I said to myself: 'This looks good,' and tried to do some more. Another soccer legend to assist coachingOne of the UK's best-known coaches and one of its toughest defenders in his playing days has joined the slate for the annual Premier League Soccer Camp in Freeport.Dennis Rofe, who captained current Premier League champions Chelsea in a professional career which spanned 519 games in 14 years, joins another former England international, Luther Blissett to spearhead the EPL team for the week, beginning July 3, 2006. They, plus Football Association pro coach Tom McCallum and Phillip French, who is making his third successive appearance at the camp, will be helped by around 20 volunteer coaches from Grand Bahama. The local coaches include Katrina Ellis, a former participant at the camp, whose skills later took her on to a soccer scholarship at a university in South Carolina, where she has just finished her first year playing on the team.
Sunny start gives way to stormy afternoonFORT MYERS: Monday should look a lot like Sunday, with a few areas of patchy fog or haze to start the day - then giving way to sunshine before showers and storms develop later this afternoon and evening.Daytime highs will remain at or just above normal in the lower 90's, with heat indices each day in the upper 90's to near 100 degrees. Overnight lows remain seasonal in the low to mid 70's. This "normal" weather pattern will persist for much of this week, so any plans outdoors would be best done early in the day. A Bermuda high in the Western Atlantic, providing easterly winds, will clash with an afternoon sea breeze winds from the west off the Gulf to produce this scattered shower and storm action. With plenty of deep tropical moisture in place, these storms will likely contain heavy downpours, frequent lighting and gusty winds.
