Strategy for facing another bad Caribbean storm season Question is ...
What do you do when cheap, low-season flights to the Caribbean and hotel discounts pop up constantly through the summer -- but so do hurricanes? At least one study is predicting the 2006 storm season will be almost as treacherous as last year's record season.According to a Colorado State University team headed by hurricane analyst William M. Gray, nine hurricanes will sweep through the Caribbean and United States this year, five of them major ones. In addition, 17 named storms are expected.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that slightly fewer storms will hit this year than last, but still far more than average: at least eight hurricanes, four to six of them serious, plus 13 to 16 named tropical storms.
Though the official hurricane season is June through November, the heaviest activity is generally concentrated between mid-August and mid-September in the eastern Caribbean and between mid-September and mid-November in the western Caribbean.

Earl J. Lang and his wife, Karen Freeman, are the owners of Acme Bicycle Shop. In February 2003, they purchased what used to be Ralph's Bike Shop on Marion Avenue in downtown Punta Gorda and changed the name to Acme. Hurricane Charley forced the shop to move and the center where it now is located is itself undergoing repairs in the hurricane's aftermath.
At any given time, the store has about 80 bikes on display, Earl said.
