Monster marlin shows recovery on Gulf CoastBILOXI Tournament director Bobby Carter saw the symbolism of the 666-pound blue marlin brought to the scales Friday at the 10th annual Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic. Not only was it symbolic of the "devilish" time he had putting this event together in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, but also of survival and recovery. "More important to me is that it symbolized that while Katrina may have knocked us (the Coast) down, she didn't knock us out," said Carter, director of VIP Services at the sponsoring Isle of Capri Casino in Biloxi. "When they put that first fish up there Friday, and it was that big blue marlin, it meant an awful lot." In the days after Katrina's Aug. 29th landfall, Carter never thought there'd be a 2006 tournament, at least not here. TIME TO IMPROVISE "Really, I thought our chances were zero," he said.Officials tackle youth drug abuseThe Bahamas National Drug Council (BNDC) has teamed up with the United Nations and various government ministries to combat child drug abuse in The Bahamas. In 2000, The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) designated June 26 as a day to recognise the adverse effects of drug abuse and illicit trafficking around the world. Malaria Risk Reported on One of the BahamasHurricanes aren't the only thing vacationers have to worry about this summer. After a malaria outbreak last month on Great Exuma Island in the Bahamas, travelers are being advised to take precautions against the mosquito-borne threat. At least 16 people have tested positive for the potentially fatal disease since the first case was reported early last month, according to an update issued by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, which is maintaining close contact with the Bahamas Ministry of Health regarding the outbreak. Most of the people who were infected were Bahamas residents; one was a United States citizen who traveled there in May. The Bahamas has responded with intense surveillance and mosquito control measures on Great Exuma, above, including repeated spraying of the airport area.
Rains bring end to forest fire threatEmergency operations centres set up in La Ronge, Beauval and Prince Albert to coordinate evacuations last week from Beauval, Grandmother's Bay, Stanley Mission, Sucker River, Missinipe, Wadin Bay and Hall Lake were in the process of shutting down after the last outstanding evacuation orders for Nemeiben Bay and English Bay were lifted."The majority of (evacuees) returned home last night, and there are a few who were returning this morning," Prince Albert Grand Council emergency and protective services commissioner Richard Kent said Monday. Grand Bahama BTVI Set For UpgradesThe government has entered into a loan agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to upgrade and restructure the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) in Grand Bahama, according to the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Training. .Who's Having the Humble Pie, Folks?I think he is completely different grass court than he was back then, I remember he served and volleyed a lot, first, second (serve). He was returning not as close (nearly as well) as he is returning now. Passings (passing shots) as well. Especially, you know, on the backhand, was much easier to come (four years ago) and then, you know, be aggressive. Message: TMF can play any way he wants and still win. Almost. Im sticking with my guns and argueing that he can be beaten at Wimbledon, even on a good if not on a great day, but it will take one of two things: Rafael Nadal, whos in TMFs head, or a serve-and-volley player of the kind we dont see any more. And the very fact that many pundits describe Ancic as a serve-and-volley player speaks volumes about the state of that art. Mikey, Tom and I bandied this subject about a bit near the end of the match. |
