Sears expects solution

Minister of Education, Science and Technology Alfred Sears said if all goes well the government's negotiations with the Teachers Union could be wrapping up soon.

He explained that the government and the Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) seem to be making some headway in regards to the teachers' salaries. Moreover, he said that he is very hopeful and optimistic that there could be an end to the roughly seven-month negotiation process soon.

"I am hopeful that within this week or the early part of next week there may be some resolution. We are still negotiating. But, I am hopeful that we will come to a resolution soon," said Minister Sears. "I think that we are considering to negotiate and the mediation of Bishop Ellis has been helpful and we are considering to exchange our information and see how we can reach an agreement on the issue of salaries."

Negotiations between government representatives and Bahamas Union of Teachers executives fell through in June over the money proposal.

Getting the proper ride

If you're thinking of buying a new bike, the first decision is where to buy. This can be challenging because there are so many places, from flea markets to big discount stores.

Acme Bicycle Shop LLC in Unit 1116 of the Cross Trails Shopping Center at 615 Cross St., Punta Gorda, is an independent store that offers a wide choice of makes and models at competitive prices and focuses on customer service after the sale.

Earl J. Lang and his wife, Karen Freeman, are the owners of Acme Bicycle Shop. In February 2003, they purchased what used to be Ralph's Bike Shop on Marion Avenue in downtown Punta Gorda and changed the name to Acme. Hurricane Charley forced the shop to move and the center where it now is located is itself undergoing repairs in the hurricane's aftermath.

At any given time, the store has about 80 bikes on display, Earl said.

‘I do.’ ‘I do, too’: Sisters marry in one ceremony

When Coleman and Mary say "I do," it will be in front of nearly 1,000 invited guests in the church where their grandparents and parents were wed. The couples will be attended by 10 bridesmaids and 10 groomsmen.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime event to share with our families and together," said Mary, noting the help the sisters had received from their mother and older sister, Gini. Virginia Stevenson, the sisters' grandmother, hand-addressed more than 500 wedding invitations.

Coleman and Mary said they had tried to laugh often and enjoy everything leading to their big day.
