Local Heroes To Be Recognized During Independence

A Local Heroes Wall of Fame will be established as an added feature to the country's independence celebrations this year to recognize heroes in communities around the Bahamas, according to Administrator for the City of Freeport, Alexander Williams. .

New vision for GBPA

Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) executives met with lawyers, accountants and bankers yesterday to discuss the company's new vision for Freeport.

The GBPA hosted the licensees to a luncheon at the Westin Grand Bahama Island at Our Lucaya Beach and Golf Resort.

Chairman Hannes Babak, at a subsequent meeting, briefed the media on the purpose of the talks, revealing that it was to discuss how the Port Authority can improve and become more transparent.

Babak said determining how the GBPA – the licensing authority of Freeport – can react quicker to requests for licences was also up for discussion.

The move comes weeks after much criticism on the sluggish state of the economy of Grand Bahama.

"Part of the community that was here today represents all the clients, all investors who are investing already in Grand Bahama, in Freeport, but especially all (of the new) investors," said Babak.

Sands pleased with results

Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations' (BAAA) President Mike Sands, said that while he was pleased with the performances at this year's Junior National Track and Field Championships, he was disappointed by the lack of support from the public.

"Generally, I'm satisfied by the efforts put forth by these young athletes," he noted, "but there were a few athletes who came out here and performed well beyond expectations. So over the next 24 hours, I will be getting together with the executive members of the BAAA to go over the results of this meet, and by Monday, we would've already decided who's going to be on the Jr. CAC and Jr. World teams," he explained.

Addressing the issue of the lack of fan support, Sands said that the BAAA has to take some of the blame.

Discovery Could Rock Archaeology

NEW PORT RICHEY - A tireless prophet with a salt-and-pepper beard and an inviting grin, John Saxer knows that mainstream archaeologists, journalists and folks in Tarpon Springs think he's nuts.

They reject his Greek mythology- and archaeology-based theories that Tarpon Springs is the center of the biblical Garden of Eden and the Tampa Bay area coastline was the seaport of Atlantis.

It's been a tough sell, acknowledges Saxer, a 55-year-old bicycle mechanic and bartender who was homeless for much of 2004.

Saxer has been ignored by archaeologists nationwide for the past 18 months, despite offering evidence of what he claims are 6,500-year-old stone ark anchors abundant on land near shorelines in New Port Richey, Holiday and Tarpon Springs.

"It gets scary when you're in front of the field," said Saxer, an amateur archaeologist since his college days at the University of Wisconsin.

McCartney returns to school

Returning to his old school, this time as teacher not as student, attorney and civic leader Branville Bran McCartney, Chairman of the Crime Prevention Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, along with three officers of the Royal Bahamas Police Force delivered a strong Safety First message Thursday to Kingsway Academy's students.

Their message was clear: the choices students make today will help keep them safe tomorrow.

And it was delivered at a time when it would hit home the hardest, one day before school ended and summer vacation began, the time police brace for an increase in accidents, the number one killer of children under the age of 14.

"Your future depends on you," McCartney told an assembly of students from grades 3-6. "It's all about choices.

Passionately in love

Are you passionately in love with your spouse? Whenever one has a passion for something, one would do anything to obtain or maintain it. If you have a passion for mangoes, you will drive miles to purchase some.

If you have a passion for leather shoes, you will spare no end to purchase a pair, perhaps even to the point of not having other needed clothing; all because you have an insatiable passion for leather shoes.

It is the same way with relationships. To have a passion for your lover is to unselfishly, unreservedly, unquestioningly, and unconditionally love and serve him/her.

Do you realise that some people have more passion for leather shoes than they do for their own relationships? How do we know that?

We know it by the way spouses treat each other.

The fight for OPBAT

Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos is crucial to the war on drugs from South America through The Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos Islands to the United States. That is not in dispute as everyone can attest to the tremendous difference it has made in detecting and helping to capture drug smugglers since its inception in 1982.

The operation, which combines personnel from the US Army, Coast Guard, Drug Enforcement Administration and the Royal Bahamas Police Force, is helicopter-oriented with Coast Guard and Army HH60 aircraft, manned by DEA and Bahamian law enforcement agents, to interdict drug smugglers using The Bahamas as a transit zone.

The problem now — if it can be termed that — is that US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld wants to concentrate the Army's equipment on the war on terror in the Middle East, which means moving them away from the OPBAT operation.

'The Tank' to fight in Las Vegas

Sherman "The Caribbean Tank" Williams is still hoping to get a big fight here at home, in front of his Bahamian fans.

"Tank" and his promoters were working on trying to bring such a big fight to either Nassau or Freeport, but nothing definite has been decided.

Promoters were in talks with the Our Lucaya Resort two years ago, about bringing a fight to Freeport, but the hurricanes threw it all off and the idea was put on hold.

In the meantime, "The Tank" is busy getting ready for a fight sometime in August.

While many would like to see this major fight take place in The Bahamas, it has recently been confirmed that the fight will take place in Las Vegas.

Originally, Sherman was scheduled to fight this month, but things had to be pushed back due to unforseen circumstances.
