Floridians have fun, will travel for holiday

Millions of Floridians will board planes and hit the roads this holiday weekend, despite rising prices in gasoline and airfare. By ROBIN PEGUERO AND KATHLEEN McGRORY rpeguero@MiamiHerald.com

The three Tenreiro kids lounged at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Saturday, after their holiday trip to the Bahamas hit unexpected turbulence.

The youngsters -- Joanisa, 17; Kristin, 14 and Zoe, 12 -- had left behind travel documents at their Naples home, temporarily jeopardizing their trip to join some 40 family members in Freeport to celebrate Independence Day and their grandmother's 70th birthday.

''When our mom was young, she used to go to the Bahamas,'' said Kristin Tenreiro. ``We're just going to see how it was when she was young.''

Olive Garden in the planning

Construction will begin in late summer or early fall for an Olive Garden in the area of Elizabeth Avenue and Interstate 25, said Olive Garden spokesman Steve Coe. The 7,500-square-foot restaurant, seating 247 patrons, will open in late winter or early spring.

Coe said Olive Garden officials are in the midst of the permitting process with city of Pueblo Land Use Department officials.

Pueblo's Olive Garden restaurant will be built in the design of the company's Tuscany-style eateries, modeled after a converted stone house in Tuscany, Italy, said Coe.

Local government officials historically say that national restaurant officials periodically visit Pueblo to scout out possible locations and review demographics.

The same officials privately say, however, that Pueblo most often does not meet the companies' strict profile requirements.

Shape of things to come

One of the most far-reaching redevelopments to be conceived in The Bahamas will create thousands of jobs and bring about a dramatic rise in tourism income. The ambitious renaissance plan is expected to involve some $400m, that will completely revitalise downtown Nassau and place it firmly on the world's stage. The master plan, drawn up by Bahamian stakeholders, has been aimed at halting economic decline.

The document makes it clear that there are two parallel tracks of action the government must take in order to initiate the redevelopment of downtown Nassau and the Harbour – both of which are equally important in obtaining real and sustained results. The first track consists of the actual construction im-provements, catalysts projects, and programmes that provide tangible results to convey the message that the downtown area is changing.

Conflicting reports on buyer for Royal Oasis

Prime Minister Perry Christie's latest comment regarding a buyer for the Royal Oasis has taken a number of listeners by surprise.

Last Wednesday, in his wrap up on the 2006/2007 Budget debate in the House of Assembly, the nation's chief executive revealed that there were two potential buyers for the distressed resort property in Grand Bahama.

His remarks came just one week after he announced on June 2 there was a buyer for the resort, when he presented the 2006/2007 Budget.

Prime Minister Christie did not give the name of the buyer, but said then that government representatives were closing a meeting in New York.

"And at that meeting, Lehman Brothers (the financier of Driftwood Freeport Ltd., which owns Royal Oasis) and the government have agreed to a purchaser for the Royal Oasis," he said.

A Sports View: Connecting, The Eras In Sports

The Bahamas was once the world's premier country in yacht sailing. In 1947 when two young sailors from the eastern area traveled all the way to California and captured the World Star Class Championship, this little country became noted as a sailing power despite its size. .

Bahamas malaria outbreak causes concern

A case of malaria which has cropped up in the Bahamas has caused concern and raised many questions for health officials and has worried local residents.

Health officials are currently screening illegal immigrants for malaria after the outbreak of the potentially fatal disease was confirmed on the Exuma islands, a sandy chain of islands southeast of Nassau.

Malaria has not been endemic in the Bahamas and apart from what are termed "sporadic" cases by the health ministry, almost all cases have been imported into the country.

The Exuma islands harbour reclusive holiday retreats belonging to wealthy Europeans, Canadians and Americans and it was here that a dozen cases of the disease have been confirmed.

According to health officials three of the patients were Haitians, one was Uruguayan, and the rest were all believed to be Bahamians.

Students get advice

Twenty-five young men and women of St. Paul's Methodist College answered the call to contribute to the ongoing development of their community, country, society and way of life.

Saturday morning the graduates gathered at St. Paul's Methodist Church with their parents, teachers and peers to celebrate their final day of high school duty, during St. Paul's Methodist's annual commencement exercise.

Following reflections of the senior class achievements by head boy and head girl, Yorick Butler and Melanise Newbold, His Excellency Joshua Sears, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the United States of America and the United Mexican States, said he is satisfied that the island of Grand Bahama and the future of The Bahamas are in very good and capable hands.
