Bank of The Bahamas today announced the July 5 launch of an architectural ideas competition to produce design concepts for its new multi-million dollar headquarters and commercial project on West Bay Street. "This project that will rise on a very unique site almost six acres with hills to the south and panoramic views of Nassau harbour to the north has the potential to be a national landmark," explained Paul McWeeney, managing director of the international award-winning financial services provider. "Because of the site, the scope of the work, the exciting possibilities and because the bank truly is a public entity, we wanted to open up the design element to all Bahamian architects and architecture students to cull from a wide range of talent the best of the best. We hope an idea will be presented that will create on this very special site a complex that is unique, utilitarian, attractive and very Bahamian.

Culinary team captures 3 regional awards
With fierce competition from 16 Caribbean countries vying for top culinary bragging rights for 2006, the Bahamas team came away with three top awards and now advances to the final round with three other countries.The Taste of the Caribbean competition is taking place at The Caribbean Hotel Association's annual CHIC conference in Miami.
The Bahamas team is sponsored by The Bahamas Hotel Association, with support from the Ministry of Tourism, Kerzner International, The Wyndham, The Radisson, The Lyford Cay Club, Prime Bahamas, Bacardi, Wholesale Wines and Spirits, The Bahamas Hotel & Restaurant Suppliers, Continental Connection Airlines, and The College of The Bahamas Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute. The Bahamas was one of four teams receiving a team Gold and moving into the finals.

Determined to prevent criminal activities in public schools, the northern Royal Bahamas Police Force school-based policing programme led by Inspector Robert Higgs, brought to light yesterday the alarming amount of illegal weapons confiscated from students.During a press conference at Police Headquarters, Inspector Higgs and a team of officers displayed to media personnel "potentially fatal" weapons and other articles confiscated from student at the three Government Schools and a few primary schools over the course of the school year.
Sine the programme has began wonderful strives has been made, Inspector Higgs explained. However, he added that there still is a lot of work to be completed.
Examining trends seen in the schools from the fall 2005 term to the spring 2006 term, Inspector Higgs said that during the fall semester, there was a decrease in weapons being carried.
