Game for the Game

Roberto Clemente was one. So was Johan Santana. Cecil Cooper, George Bell and Bobby Bonilla were, too. Among the others were Bip Roberts, Jody Davis, Kelly Gruber, Fernando Viña and Dave Hollins.

Dan Uggla bettered them all.

All of the aforementioned were players taken at one point in the Rule V draft – the lottery that tells the whole world that your baseball team doesn't want you all that much – who developed into All-Stars. Uggla, near as anyone can tell, is the first one to make the All-Star Game in his initial year of eligibility.

He'll be the one in Pittsburgh – but not the only one, thankfully – with the eyes bulging out of his head. Eyes, too, that will grow misty at what they see all around them.

By its very name, the All-Star Game is the showcase for the game's super talents, many of them living, breathing, still-playing legends.

Popularity of Depression glass proves unwavering

When "The Lord of the Rings" first hit theatres in 2001, Burger King patrons could augment their Whopper with a free, glowing Hobbit chalice that worked well for snack time but seemed unnatural around the dinner table.Promotional items have been around for a long time, but the focus has changed.During the Great Depression, the closest thing to the Hobbit chalice was a craze of colored glass meant to be the centerpiece of the dinner table. It wasn't because things were more expensive, but because they were cheaper. Depression-era glassware was a cheap and colorful product given away at the movie theatres or with extra-large bags of flour at the grocery store. The story of Depression glass follows America through various hallmarks 20th century: immigration, poverty and prosperity, the baby boom and even globalization. The National Depression Glass Association is holding its 32nd annual convention on July 8 and 9 at the Waxahachie Civic Center.

Key tips for hurricane season cruising

Year-round Caribbean cruising's on an upswing as lines ranging from Princess to Carnival are keeping some of their biggest and splashiest ships sailing in the region throughout summer and fall. And yet, aside from experiencing slightly steamier tropical weather than in winter months, cruising the Caribbean during the summer and fall otherwise comes with one pretty big caveat: Hurricane season can wreak havoc on your vacation.

In 1998, Windjammer's Fantome, which deposited passengers safely on land before it sailed out to sea to avoid an off-the-charts violent hurricane, tragically lost its ship and crew. One year later, Carnival's Tropicale lost power as it was sailing out of the way of another storm (though no lives were lost). Disaster stories like these are the exception rather than the rule, but if you're planning a Caribbean cruise from June through November, it pays to be aware of the possibilities.
