Junior golf team headed to Puerto Rico

Local golf club The Poop Deck Eagles presented a $2,000 cheque to the Bahamas Junior Golf Association (BJGA) to assist with the junior national team's expenses while competing this week in the 19th Caribbean Junior Amateur Golf Championships (CJAGC) at the Westin Rio Mar Beach Golf Resort & Spa in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

According to club member and treasurer of the BJGA James Gomez, the Poop Deck Eagles are committed to giving to various organizations on a charitable basis. "The club hopes that this support will assist the juniors as they continue to develop their golf skills and attitudes in their quest to represent the country proudly," Gomez said.

He also pointed out that instead of dipping into the club's funds, members gave from their pockets during their last meeting.

The healthy wealthy cycling roadshow

Jonathan Vaughters was enjoying a tour of the New York Stock Exchange's trading floor when a stranger tapped him on the shoulder and asked him to wait before returning with a $25,000 cheque for Vaughters' developmental cycling team.

“I'd never seen him before, he was simply a friend of a friend who had heard I was coming," says Vaughters, who as a professional rider was a member of the team that helped Lance Armstrong to his first Tour de France win.

Bahamas Supermarkets Ltd. strengthens executive team

The appointments – made over recent weeks – were announced as the company completed internal re-structuring to support increasing sales and market share.

"As Bahamas Supermarkets continues to increase market share and look to the future, it gives us great pleasure to announce the appointments of Mario Simmons, Sharece Murray and Owen Burrows, three professional Bahamians who have been named to key posts," said Bryan Knowles, CFAO.

Risk-prone athletes met with clause for concern

ATLANTA — Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney doesn't ride a motorcycle — but he does fly his own plane. Risky? Maybe, but not specifically prohibited by the team.

However, if Kerney were injured and missed games due to his hobby, the Falcons could recoup salary for breaching a "dangerous activities" clause in all NFL contracts.

Kerney is a licensed pilot who guides his single-engine plane from DeKalb Peachtree Airport to cities in the mid-Atlantic up to once a week in the offseason. He's even flown to the Bahamas, with backup quarterback Matt Schaub an occasional passenger.

Paragraph 3 of the NFL's Standard Representation agreement reads that "players will not engage in any activity other than football which may involve a significant risk of personal injury."

The NFL is different than other major sports because it rarely gets specific in contracts.
