Virgin Atlantic launches services to Jamaica

Virgin Atlantic Airways launched its first services between London and Jamaica. The direct flights between London Gatwick and Montego Bay will be twice-weekly and will operate on a Boeing 747-400. The new services mean up to 100,000 more visitors travelling between the UK and Montego Bay within the first 12 months.

According to the Jamaican Tourist Board, in the first six months of this year the number of UK visitors to Jamaica rose by 19%, compared with the first half of 2005. April alone saw a record number of UK visitors with an increase of 35% year on year.

Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of Virgin Atlantic, commented: "Virgin Atlantic is delighted to be jammin' in Jamaica from today! We are the first UK scheduled airline to arrive in Montego Bay and passengers travelling on the route will now benefit from increased competition, which will ultimately lead to better value for money and quality of service for passengers travelling.

Terrorism

THE arrest last week of seven members of a fringe religious group in Miami has revealed what could be a new phase in al-Qaedas grand plan for global terrorism. The FBI charged the seven, who belong to a group that calls itself the Seas of David, with conspiring to work under al-Qaedas direction and control to bomb the 110-story Sears Tower in Chicago and the FBIs Miami headquarters and to launch attacks in at least three other US cities. The objective, US authorities said, was to sow terror that would be greater than 9/11.

To accomplish that, al-Qaeda will rely not on suicide squads trained and indoctrinated in its camps in Afghanistan, as it did in 9/11, but mainly on homegrown recruits. Of the seven arrested in Miami, five were US citizens, one a permanent resident and one an illegal immigrant from Haiti.

Ackee - a fascinating tree

THE ACKEE TREE 'Blighia sapida' comes originally from Ivory Coast and Ghana, where the tree is planted for shade and for its wood. The wood is not attacked by termites. In West Africa, the green fruits are used for soap because they contain oil. The plant was introduced to Jamaica at the end of the 18th century by Captain Bligh as food for the slaves. From Jamaica, the tree spread to other islands in the Caribbean such as Haiti, Trinidad, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Antilles, Central America, various South American countries, Florida and the Philippines.

The ackee tree is considered a beautiful tree by many with smooth grey bark that grows to 10-12 metres. The tree grows well in tropical to subtropical areas and can grow up to 900 metres above sea level. The leaves are shiny on the upper side and lightly hairy on the underside.
