government of the bahamasBahama Islands News, Articles and InformationBHCAWU electionsThe Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union should not be left to languish for too much longer without a person being in charge, who can definitively lay claim to the presidency. If that state of affairs were allowed to continue, it could eventually lead to chaos and a breakdown in the orderliness of the union's business. The general election for the officers three weeks ago ended in a tie vote for the leadership and up to now new date has been set for a runoff to determine conclusively who the president should be. The incumbent president, Pat Bain, is in a tenuous position having lost his executive slate, except for the general secretary, and the other elected officials have categorically stated that they want him gone. Technically, Mr Bain is still the president as he did not lose the position, but he will forever be between the proverbial rock and hard place when it comes to getting his programmes moving.
Compressed natural gas should replace LPGSome eight weeks past, in the middle of the Lenten season I wrote, what I thought at the time, would be my last missive on LNG.I became quite excited some two weeks afterwards when my good friend and classmate of six -plus years, the Minister responsible for energy and the environment (whose portfolio does not include LNG, which apparently has been deemed to be closer akin to fish or fowl than to energy or the environment), made an announcement indicating that Government would issue a definitive statement on the matter in short order. Two weeks later the Prime Minister announced to the nation that the government had made a policy decision that it is not opposed to LNG and that LNG "can happen in the country". That was a month ago. Since then an eerie silence has prevailed. In my prior article I touted the possibility of compressed natural gas (CNG) completely displacing propane (LPG or cooking gas if you will) for domestic and commercial cooking throughout the country, and at significant cost saving to users, once an LNG facility is established.
Historian sheds light on life of real piratesYou may think of them as bathless, scurvy, out-of-control, barbarous cutthroats, commanded and cowered by the meanest dude among them, but in reality, says Jason Acosta, pirates were an egalitarian bunch.Acosta, who is descended from a pirate who swashbuckled alongside Jean Lafitte, says the pirate ship in many ways was an enlightened ship of state, with three branches of government, as it were, complete with checks and balances. Acosta's pronouncements are the result of three years of research undertaken for a history thesis at the University of Florida. With entertainment and fashion currently awash in a Jolly Roger rage, Acosta's findings are particularly relevant. The 28-year-old, who teaches American history at St. Patrick's Inner Parish School in Gainesville, scoured primary source material to piece together what a pirate's life was really like.
