In announcing the news, Rome's cinephile mayor, Walter Veltroni, called Connery "an actor of extraordinary quality who has worked with the world's greatest directors and written some of the most unforgettable moments in movie history" . He also said the evergreen celebrity "loves Italy". Connery, 76, will attend the opening and closing ceremonies in October and introduce a 14-film restrospective starting with Sidney Lumet's gritty 1965 army drama The Hill, often considered his best work, and ending with Finding Forrester (2000) . The former Edinburgh milkman and coffin polisher - since 2000 Sir Sean Connery - will also receive the festival's first career achievement award. Last month he was similarly honoured by the American Film Institute . A DVD in which Connery looks back on his life and career will be presented when the Rome fest debuts on October 13 .

A Sports View: ABFB And The Tough Decision

Way back in the day when the great Tommie Robinson was one of the best sprinters in the entire world, a delicate situation surfaced. He had become exposed to the best of training expertise. At the University of Michigan his coach was respected worldwide and had contributed a lot to Robinson being much more than just another good potential from the Islands. .

CANOE -- SLAM! Sports - Columnists - Kernaghan: For 42 years, it's been quite a ride

So long. After 42 years spent in press boxes, locker rooms, sidelines and anywhere else athletes gather, I've decided to quit writing a daily column while I'm ahead.

But not so fast, Skippy. After a bit of a break, I'm going to sneak back in under the guise of a freelancer writing a column a week.

It's been some ride and my cups runneth over. World Cups, Stanley Cups, Grey Cups, Memorial Cups, Vanier Cups and Allan Cups weave into Olympic Games, Super Bowls, World Series and all manner of championships and trophies on grass, artificial turf, asphalt, ice, snow, water and canvas.

After thousands of competitions and millions of type-written words, one seeks a phrase, a word, to encapsule it.

The word is truth.

For all its occasional foibles, the essence of sport is truth.

For Families

OVER THE PAST 13 YEARS , the D.C. Caribbean Carnival has cultivated a following, with some fans looking for culture and others in search of one kicking party. Both, we assure you, can be found here. Tomorrow at 11 a.m., the carnival begins at Georgia and Missouri avenues NW with a parade -- a blur of outrageously ornate costumes, steel drums and troupes representing nations such as the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, and Grenada. The ultimate destination is the Banneker Community Center field, 2500 Georgia Ave. NW, where the carnival will continue tomorrow and Sunday, noon-9 p.m. Featuring live music by Iwer George and Fay-Ann Lyons, and foods including jerk chicken, curried goat and roti. The parade is free; entrance to the carnival is $10 tomorrow, $15 on Sunday. 202-726-2204 or http://www.dccaribbeancarnival.com .

Truth, justice vs. America's way

WHEN the usually taciturn Sam Shepard, who made his reputation as an outlaw of sorts, decides to lay down the law, one tends to pay attention.

"Well, right out of the gate let me get something straight," says the 62-year-old playwright, one hand brushing his gray-flecked, still-ample mane of hair, his blue eyes taking on a steely glint. "I'm not a politician, I hate politicians. I'm a playwright. I don't side with either Republicans or Democrats or anything in between. The material should be evocative, it should raise all kinds of questions. But I don't have any answers. I don't have a political agenda. It's strictly a play."

Faith tourism takes off in St Lucia

Following the success of the Air Jamaica-sponsored "The Walk: Sanctuary for the Soul" womens seminar last month, the organizers have confirmed they will return to St Lucia next year for another faith tourism meeting from June 21 to 24, 2007.

Kaye Chong, one of Air Jamaica's managers of Community and Special Market Sales, said the Jamaican flag carrier was pleased to support the ground-breaking seminar which attracted women of faith from the Caribbean and the eastern seaboard of the United States.

"We at Air Jamaica are committed to tapping into the faith market in the United Sates and the Caribbean and look forward to another inspiring meeting next year, said Chong who, along with the participants, benefited from powerful guest speakers, interactive sessions, a money management session, and 'Biblical Aromatherapy' as registrants sampled essential oils which were used in Biblical times.

Independence golf tourney set

The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce's 2nd Annual Independence Golf Tournament has attracted more than 100 participants, and the list is still growing. According to BCOC golf committee chairman Khaalis Rolle, "This year's event might be bigger than the last."

However, instead of hosting the golf tournament during the Independence weekend the committee had to move the event up to this coming Saturday.

It will be a two-man scramble format for the tournament which will be held at the Cable Beach Resorts (Radisson) course. Rolle told the Nasau Guardian that the golf tournament has become one of the chief fund-raising events for the BCOC.

"We wanted to find an activity that most of the members of the Chamber could be a part of. Most of the members play golf so it just seemed logical to continue an event like this."

On Tuesday, the BCOC golf committee also announced that Diamonds International has come on board as the title sponsor of the tournament.

Laing touts The Bahamas' success during speech at African summit

Speaking at the 12th Annual Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja, former Minister of Economic Development Zhivargo Laing touted The Bahamas' success in international trade and suggested the way forward for Nigeria's government.

Mr. Laing — along with His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, president of Nigeria, the president of the National Assembly and many others — addressed this year's summit held June 7 - 9.

Hailing from a small independent country, Mr. Laing boasted of The Bahamas' trade accomplishments, adding that The Bahamas is one of the most successful small developing countries in the world.

That, he says, is because The Bahamas has embraced international trade; however, the former economic minister quickly added that many Bahamian people view formal participation in regional and international free trade arrangements with some trepidation.
