Schuyler to improve septic tank inspection

"But I suspect the vast majority of the people will be proactive in this because they're the ones that will benefit," Fagan said. "It's for the betterment of the lakes and the people who live on the lakes."

The lakes are in an established protection and rehabilitation district.

The county Watershed Office will start at the north end of Waneta Lake, going south along the east shore. Fagan said letters will be sent to property owners asking that they schedule a pump-out and inspection. Problems will be identified, and property owners will be given between six months and two years to resolve the problems, depending on their severity, Fagan said.

Fagan said the grant should cover the first two years of a five-year inspection plan. The lakes' association will cover the funding in subsequent years, he said.

Uniquely Singapore heads Clipper fleet

Having passed the Turks & Caicos Islands, the Bahamas and Bermuda, the clippers are now passing by a continuous display of aviation history along the Eastern Seaboard - Cape Canaveral, the Kennedy Space Centre, and Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Flyer made the first powered flight back in 1903. The yachts are flying along too, making excellent speed under spinnaker as they approach the continental shelf. The race is now quite tense tactically. Over the last 24 hours, all of the fleet have gybed round to have the wind coming from their port side, the timing of which has been key to overnight gains and losses. Uniquely Singapore seem to have timed theirs well and are still in the lead, with westernaustralia.com in second place; the only yacht to have gained on Singapore overnight (by a whole mile!).The east-west spread of the fleet is going to become a lot more significant as they near land.

Student uses poker winnings to pay for college

Students do a variety of things to raise college tuition money. Some get scholarships, others work and many take out large student loans.

David Wood plays poker.

Wood, a junior in the School of Management, is one of AbsolutePoker.com's finalists for the Win Your Tuition tournament. If he plays his cards right, he could beat out five other students from around the country and win a year's worth of college tuition.

"It's really not a question; I'm going to win the thing," said Wood. The finalists have already played a mock match online which Wood won.

"I'm much, much better in person," he said.

Wood got into gambling at a young age. He and a friend began betting against each other in pool and eventually moved on to other games like basketball.

National stadium in '07

The Bahamas and Chinese governments were pleased to show Bahamians that they mean what they say when they met their deadline for the ground-breaking of the capital's new national stadium yesterday.

The ground-breaking comes on the heels of the Independence Celebrations, which were postponed after an unexpected shower on Sunday evening between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. prompting thousands of excited Bahamians to find shelter or return home. However, with the proposed new stadium, such events may be held indoor in the near future, where the weather cannot impact them.

At the ceremony last evening Minister of Youth, Sports and Housing Neville Wisdom said that the stadium will "serve as a national gathering place for sports and culture and in times of challenge."

A win-wind proposition

Seven-day cruises for $500 to $600 in September. Fifty percent off a companion's room at an inclusive club on a Caribbean island. A fourth night free at a luxurious resort in the Bahamas.

That's good.

But many travelers will jump on these deals without giving a thought to why prices are discounted.

That's bad.

The reason? IT'S HURRICANE SEASON.

But don't automatically shy away from that cruise to Mexico, that all-inclusive on Jamaica, that diving expedition in the Cayman Islands.

Just be aware that nature has a habit of disrupting agendas during summer and fall. If your vacation plans include areas susceptible to hurricanes, purchase travel insurance when booking a trip.

It's important, however, to know what kind of insurance you are buying.

Porch Swing -- Being dependable has its limits

My brother has been doing this tribal wilderness thing in Hawaii for the past three years and on the eve of his return to civilization (or the United States, as his wife puts it), I get a phone call from him informing me that his last wishes are being sent to me for safe keeping, and execution if necessary.“Oh, for crying out loud," I said when I heard his plan. “What's with everyone in this family entrusting me with their last wishes? Why don't you people get attorneys or something?" “Well," he says, “it's because you're so stinking rotten dependable it's ridiculous. People like you are entrusted with last wishes."There's a fine how-do-you-do if I ever heard one. .
