Georgian President leaves for Turkey to participate in the BTC opening ceremony
President Mikheil Saakashvili left for Ceyhan, Turkey, to attend an official opening ceremony of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline. The BTC is the longest pipeline in the world at 1,768 km. The BTC pipeline began filling at the Sangachal oil terminal in Azerbaijan on May 10, 2005. The first flow of oil crossed Georgia in October, 2005. This was an important event in the history of Georgia.
The BTC pipeline project involved 3.6 billion USD in investments to unlock a vast store of energy from the Caspian Sea by providing new crude oil from Azerbaijan through Georgia to Turkey, bypassing Russia, for onward delivery to world markets.

Singapore's Sentosa seeks Monaco glitz

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Turning Singapore's southern island of Sentosa into Asia's glitziest address could be quite a challenge.

The British colonial rulers used Sentosa as a fort, while the Japanese carried out massacres on its beaches during World War Two. After independence in 1965, Singapore turned the island into a much-ridiculed tourist site.

Now Sentosa -- about three times the area of Monaco -- is being developed to be Asia's answer to the French Riviera and a hang-out for the rich and famous.

Sentosa's development is part of Singapore's wider economic makeover. As manufacturers shift jobs to low-cost rivals such as China, the city-state of 4.4 million people will have to rely more on services such as private banking and tourism for growth.

Singapore is already Asia's leading private banking center, catering to wealthy Chinese, Taiwanese, Indonesians and Indians.

FBI smashes tower plot

SEVEN people have been arrested in connection with a plot to attack Chicago's Sears Tower and other buildings in the US, a federal law enforcement official said.

The alleged plotters arrested in Miami yesterday were mainly Americans with no apparent ties to al-Qaeda or other terrorist organisations.

The Sears Tower is the tallest skyscraper in the US, standing 435m high.

About 20 FBI agents backed up by state and local police officers made the arrests.

Miami US Attorney Alexander Acosta said the investigation was ongoing. Local media reported agents also raided a warehouse in Miami's Liberty City section.
