Joining Hands For Health: “Be Prepared For This Hurricane Season ...

It would benefit residents on the islands of The Bahamas to be fully prepared for this year's hurricane season; and they should strive not to be caught unawares.

Begin your preparation by familiarizing yourself with hurricane related terms to help identify a hurricane hazard. These include:

v

Tropical Depression: An organized system of clouds and thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds of 38 MPH (33 knots) or less.

v

Sustained winds are defined as one-minute average wind measured at about 33 ft (10 meters) above the surface.

v

Tropical Storm: An organized system of strong thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds of 39–73 MPH (34–63 knots).

v

Hurricane: An intense tropical weather system of strong thunderstorms with a well-defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds of 74 MPH (64 knots) or higher.

IDB Funding Education Initiative

The government's ongoing campaign to address certain key and persistent challenges in the education system received a major boost Friday when education, labour and training officials signed a $22.5 million contract with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for the funding of an initiative which officials said they expect would result in major improvements in education. .

Cuba and the Human Rights Council

During the days prior to and after the voting on the membership to the UN Human Rights Council, on May 9, 2006, I have been reading comments made by some persons on news media, including foreigners, questioning Cuba's record on human rights and giving the Bahamian public their views on what is good or bad about Cuba in this important area of human development. Also, there have been comments on other areas related to Cuba.

I should begin by saying that on May 9, 2006, a total of 135 countries out of 191 voted for Cuba to be a member of the UN Human Rights Council. Who is going to argue that more than two-thirds of the UN membership are fools? Who can say that all these countries were wrong by choosing Cuba for such an important body? Isn't that a recognition of the kind of human rights that Cuba stands for?

When I was interviewed after the vote at the UN by a local daily and asked if that was considered a victory, I said that the election to the UN Council could only be regarded as a victory against those like the U.S.

NEMA Prepares For Active Storm Season

As forecasters issued a hurricane warning for parts of Florida's Gulf Coast Monday, the local National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in issuing an advisory of its own, once again encouraged residents to take all available measures to ensure that they are well prepared for what is expected to be another active hurricane season. .

A 'Pirates' Life for Naomie

LOS ANGELES -- Naomie Harris almost didn't land a part in director Gore Verbinski's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" because of her looks.

"Gore didn't actually want me for the part because he said that I was actually too pretty and he didn't want anybody pretty," she reveals. "He wanted an older actress. The casting director, Denise Chamian ... persuaded Gore to audition me. When I walked into the room, he said, 'You're going to have to do this like three maybe four times so okay, let's just have a go.' And so I read it once and then he went, 'How would you like to come to the Bahamas?' It was great."

Verbinski didn't have to worry about Harris' good looks though, once she transformed into the character Tia Dalma, a mysterious Caribbean soothsayer from Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp) past.
