Trinidad to get its First 'Hindu' Radio Station

Pot of Spain, July 7: After several years of legal battles at different levels, Trinidad and Tobago will get its first 'Hindu' radio station.

The move comes after the British Privy Council ordered the government to give the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) led by Satnarayan Maharaj a radio licence "forthwith."

The Law Lords ruled that "an appropriate frequency to be agreed with by the Central Broadcasting Services (CBS) Ltd, or in default of agreement, to be determined by the High Court."

The state was also ordered to pay the SDMS costs of brining its appeal to the Privy Council and those incurred.

The station will be the first radio facility "promoting" Hinduism in the Caribbean nation, which has a population of over 300,000 Hindus.

Police Beat

Police Beat items are compiled from reports of Marion area law enforcement agencies. In police, sheriff and highway patrol news, names and addresses appear as they do in the police department and sheriff's office reports. These are arrest reports only. The city or county prosecutor later will decide whether to file formal charges.

Chappelle, Pee-wee return to tube

Dave Chappelle is finally returning with new episodes of "Chappelle's Show" - well, sort of.

An audience has never seen these episodes, which will premiere 9 p.m. Sunday on Comedy Central. This actually is work that Chappelle completed before walking away from the series nearly two years ago.

Comedy Central says he left enough behind to make up six new episodes. Chappelle has said he doesn't want them to air.

But the cable channel, which drew some of its biggest audiences with "Chappelle's Show," obviously has a different opinion. So these sketches are being dubbed as "lost" episodes.

Chappelle will be seen only in the sketches. "Chappelle" contributors such as Charlie Murphy and Neal Brennan will stand in for Chappelle during the introductions and exits.

The material is telling of Chappelle's state of mind before he left.

Millions to be spent on Lynden Pindling International Airport

The Perry Christie administration will pump millions into the newly renamed Lynden Pindling International Airport to make it into a world-class terminal.

Minister of Transport and Aviation, Glenys Hanna-Martin said the government has recently spent millions of dollars repairing runways at the former Nassau International Airport and is prepared to spend more – as it is committed to transforming the entire facility and its inner operations.

"This airport which is so critical to our existence is currently undergoing a renaissance. Already multi-million dollar runway works have been completed," said the Minister. " Very shortly a world- renowned international airport firm will assume the day to day management of this facility, heralding the redevelopment and revitalisation of this facility into a premiere, world-class airport.

Miss Knockout

Picture it, lovely young women in ultra chic garb strutting their long-legged strides down a T-shaped runway as cameras click and audience members gasp in delight at the fantastic Bahamian talent on display. One after the other they come in fabulous gowns sponsored by Bahamian designers such as the inimitable Cedric Bernard whose haute couture was indeed hot couture.

His magnificent peacock dress (a fabulous tangerine- coloured frock with matching head-dress) and English derby dress (think 18th century English ladies sipping tea)) were worn to full effect by Aquelle Plakaris, the first Ms Commonwealth Bahamas. The peacock dress will be displayed on the world's stage in England when Aquelle goes off to represent The Bahamas in the Ms Commonwealth International pageant this month.

Nestor out

LONDON -- American twins Bob and Mike Bryan advanced to their seventh consecutive Grand Slam doubles final yesterday after defeating Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Mark Knowles of the Bahamas 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3), 6-1 in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Nestor and Knowles bowed out after playing the longest match in Wimbledon history -- a six-hour, nine-minute quarter-final win over Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry. .
