Coast Guard Medevacs Woman off Local Casino Boat, Delivers Blood ...

Jay Kendig, 74, residence unknown, was medically evacuated off the cruise ship, Noordam, about 200 miles north of San Salvador, Bahamas.

The Coast Guard was notified Friday by the crew of the Noordam requesting medical evacuation for Kendig due to possible internal bleeding. It was determined by medical staff on board the cruise ship that Kendig may need a blood transfusion while still on boad the ship.

Once the blood type was verified by medical staff on the Noordam and family, crewmembers from Air Station Miami were requested to transfer a package of blood to the cruise ship. Florida Blood Bank provided the blood and a Coast Guard Falcon jet was launched around 4 p.m. yesterday. The Falcon crew arrived over the cruise ship off San Salvador around 6:30 p.m., and dropped the secured package of blood in the vicinity of the ship. A boat crew on the cruise ship were able to lower a vessel and pick up the package of blood from the ocean and provide that to the medical staff on aboard.

Coming back to the Island

Mayaguana is one of the islands with an 'anchor project' with announced investments to fetch into the billions over the next few years. Work on some infrastructure has already started and in time that small island, the most south-easterly of The Bahamas chain - will experience a population explosion. Migrants of all categories will, out of necessity, out-number the island's current population of just under 500.

The Abraham's Bay High School with a total student population of 34, is also expected to experience a dramatic increase as Mayaguanians 'come home' joined by other migrants. Principal of Abraham's Bay High is veteran educator Vernice Gibson, a native Mayaguanian. She tells us : "I was born in Mayaguana, but went to Nassau at an early age." Having held teaching posts in several Family Islands including Tarpon Bay, Eleuthera, San Salvador and New Bight, Cat Island, she became principal of the all-age school from 1999 to 2004, when the school evolved into Abraham's Bay High School.

Spirit Air to resume MB flights to Florida

Spirit Air's direct flights to Fort Lauderdale from Myrtle Beach are back after a two-year hiatus, giving locals access to 20 destinations through the airline's Florida hub.

The nonstop, daily service will start Feb. 15 and continue year-round.

For Grand Strand residents, the service, through connecting flights, opens an easier way to high-profile destinations such as Cancun, Mexico; Cayman islands; San Juan, Puerto Rico; San Salvador, Bahamas; St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, among others.

The airline also will start flying from Fort Lauderdale to Las Vegas and Los Angeles starting early next year.

"This opens up an additional market for Myrtle Beach, where Spirit will currently be the only airline to fly nonstop to Florida," said Lisa Bourcier, spokeswoman for Horry County, which operates the Myrtle Beach International Airport.

Pop stars club together to buy island in the sun

Colombian born singer, Shakira, apparently already has a paradise of her own, after buying her own island in the Bahamas. In order to do this, she has formed an association with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, as well as noting the interest of Spanish singers, Alejandro Sanz and Miguel Bose.

The two stars have created 'Bonds Cay', an island of 700 acres situated north of the Bahamas and 125 miles from Florida. The island, that has five beaches and three bays as well as numerous waterfalls and rocky areas, was acquired by the association for $16 million.

Both Shakira and Waters have stated that they are intent on building a luxury hotel on the island, as well as a number of other residences with private beaches. Both Spanish singers have acquired land on the new island, and are expected to build mansions there next year.
