Two Bahamian men admit to smuggling immigrants
Two Bahamian men admitted today to illegally smuggling Haitian immigrants into Martin County aboard a boat in September in exchange for payments.Alvio Roberto Penn, 41, and Andrew Craig Gates, 38, pleaded guilty in federal court to two counts of harboring illegal immigrants "for the purpose of commercial advantage or private financial gain" in connection with two of the Haitian men who were dropped off in Rocky Point on Sept. 15.

According to an article carried in the Jamaica Gleaner on Monday, written by senior writer Janet Silvera, Minister of Tourism Noel Lynch is quoted as stating "Barbados will have 14 cruise ships docked in its port, six of which will be permanently berthed as floating hotels, during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007".Attending the Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC-29) being held in Freeport, Grand Bahamas, he went on to state: "We are expecting about 20 000 fans for the finals. Of that number our ports will accommodate some 12 000 and the land-based entities the other 8 000 people."
Anyone with a modicum of understanding of tourism knew that when the dates of the event were announced that it was inevitable that existing accommodation on Barbados would have to be supplemented by cruise ships.

The Carlyle Hotel on Manhattan's Upper East Side was the designated meeting spot, in the bar made famous by Ludwig Bemelman's mural of Manhattan, Carlyle's very own Euphronios masterpiece. Bemelman's was packed at 5:30, and I ran into US News & World Report publisher Mort Zuckerman, who was happy to see me thinking I was his date. Medici Conspiracy author, Peter Watson, arrived soon after. And Peter and I settled in at a table beside one of Bemelman's bankers on the wall.Watson's wife, a pretty, petite woman, who works as a "business getter" for Christie's auction house giving lunches and dinners for customers, also stopped by briefly to say hello.
But it was far too noisy to talk about antiquities conspiracy at length, so Peter and I agreed to meet for tea later in the week a bit further down Madison Avenue at the Lowell Hotel.
