Quietly protecting the secrets

If there is a poster child for the U.S. Marine Corps, it might well be Gerhardt Buckentin. At age 25, he's nearly finished with his third tour of duty. He's served as a brig guard in Okinawa, Japan, an embassy guard in Moscow, Russia, Nassau, Bahamas and most recently, in Baghdad, Iraq. He's traveled the world, yet he seems innocently small town. His words are chosen selectively, if not conservatively. He'll release only as much as the person he's talking to probably needs to know; carefully calculated. At Mayer Lutheran High School, he was considered a shy kid, not somebody who sought the attention of others. It's a personality trait that has probably served him well as a guard with the Marines. Two weeks ago he set foot on U.S. soil for the first time in months, only to learn that he will be the featured guest of the New Germany Legion, which is getting ready to celebrate its 60th anniversary Nov.

Top US Defence official reviews OPBAT operations

United States Assistant Secretary of Defence Thomas O'Connell visited The Bahamas on October 16-18 on an information-gathering tour of Operation Bahamas Turks & Caicos (OPBAT). O'Connell oversees the Department of Defence counter-drug efforts worldwide.

O'Connell travelled to The Bahamas at the request of United States Ambassador John Rood. During his stay, he toured OPBAT facilities at the Embassy, travelled to the OPBAT base on Great Exuma, and observed OPBAT operations.

During a reception at the Ambassador's residence on October 16, O'Connell reaffirmed the United States' commitment to OPBAT.

"While there may be change in the programme, the change will be bad news for drug dealers," O'Connell said.

"We are still evaluating all the options, but we are confident that OPBAT will maintain or improve its current level of effectiveness.

TEEX to receive homeland security funding for 2007

U.S. Representative Chet Edwards recently announced that $22 million has been approved under the final 2007 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill for emergency response training at TEEX. Edwards worked with the Texas delegation in Congress to reverse the Administration's proposed $15 million cut in training through TEEX's National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center. Each year TEEX trains approximately 40,000 emergency responders how to respond and manage large-scale terrorist attacks and natural disasters on behalf of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of Grants and Training.

"The global war on terror demands that we act responsibly as a Congress to support vital programs that protect Americans here at home," said Edwards, who serves on the House Homeland Security Appropriations Sub-Committee and whose district includes Bryan-College Station.
