Tyson vs. Berbick Was Twenty Years Ago Next Wednesday - RIP Trevor ...

17.11.06 - By James Slater: With the shocking news of former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbicks death still fresh in peoples minds, the twentieth anniversary of perhaps his most famous ring appearance will be upon us next week. Had Trevor lived, he more than likely would have had some attention bestowed on him once again due to his part in the Mike Tyson story and its beginning at world title level. Largely forgotten by the average fight fan, Berbick, the former WBC champ, was living an obscure life in Jamaica. Those who did remember him, however, were aware of how strange the Berbick life story had become. Or had been. Firstly, Trevor was telling anyone who would listen that the Tyson match had been a dodgy fight, one in which he had only lost because hed been Gotten to beforehand. Berbick claimed that his hotel room had been sprayed with some substance or another and as a result his equilibrium was seriously compromised.

Boxing: Ex boxing champion Trevor Berbick found dead

Former heavyweight boxing champion Trevor Berbick was found dead in a church courtyard on Saturday with chop wounds to his head in a suspected homicide.

Berbick, who was believed to be 52 and was beset by legal problems following his retirement from the ring, lost his heavyweight title to Mike Tyson and was the last boxer to fight Muhammad Ali.

Berbick's body was discovered about 6:30 a.m. in his hometown parish of Portland, constable Beverly Howell said. He was pronounced dead by a local doctor in the courtyard. Police are treating Berbick's death as a homicide, Inspector Victor Henry said.

Police have no word yet on what kind of weapon was used or how many people were involved in Berbick's death, Howell said.

After beating Ali in 1981 in a unanimous decision in the Bahamas, Berbick went on to win the WBC heavyweight title fours years later in a decision over Pinklon Thomas.

Boat Show constant: Everything's bigger

Fort Lauderdale The boats at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show just keep on getting bigger, and it's not only the superyachts.

The Fort Lauderdale show is known for having the most boats 80 feet and longer, which is the definition of a superyacht. At the 47th edition of the show, which opened Thursday at six sites and runs through Monday, I also found bigger versions of everything, including center consoles, the most popular type of offshore fishing boat in South Florida.

The luxurious superyachts get most of the attention at the show, and it's been that way since I covered my first Fort Lauderdale boat show in 1990. The difference now is that the sizes of the boats, and their price tags, have increased significantly.

Back in the good old days, you could get a really nice boat for $10 million.
