Nassau, Bahamas | Tiger Woods and Ernie Els gained approval Thursday from Bahamian officials for a luxury resort they're helping finance along with a group led by a British billionaire.

The $1.3 billion private residential community, planned for an exclusive corner of New Providence island, will include an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Els, Woods said in a statement. It will be called the Albany Golf & Beach Club.

RockResorts Announces Addition of Rum Cay Resort in Bahamas

Montana Holdings Ltd., the Nassau-based development company of Rum Cay Resort Marina, has selected RockResorts to manage the resort operations on the $700 million, 870-acre multi-use luxury resort / residential / marina development on Rum Cay Island, Bahamas. RockResorts, a luxury hotel company headquartered in Broomfield, Colorado, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vail Resorts, Inc. (NYSE: MTN - News) and operates resorts in five US states. In addition to managing the luxury hotel and spa facilities, RockResorts has been engaged to manage the marina village, golf facility, certain residential rental programs and one or more private membership clubs. RockResorts will provide technical consulting and marketing services during the development and pre-opening phases of the Rum Cay project.

"The addition of Rum Cay to the RockResorts portfolio reflects our commitment to grow our luxury hotel brand in select locations with unique, exceptional resorts," said Rob Katz, CEO of Vail Resorts.



Bahamas approves resort financed by Els, Woods

NASSAU: Tiger Woods and Ernie Els gained approval from Bahamian officials on Thursday for a luxury resort they're helping finance along with a group led by a British billionaire.

The US$1.3bil private residential community, planned for an exclusive corner of New Providence island, will include an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Els, Woods said in a statement. It will be called the Albany Golf & Beach Club.

“With Albany, I look forward to spending more time in the Bahamas and playing Ernie on our new golf course,'' Woods said. “We plan to make Albany very special.''

The government and representatives of the Tavistock Group, a holding company managed by British billionaire and Bahamian resident Joseph Lewis, signed the deal on Thursday allowing construction to go forward after two years of negotiations and environmental impact studies.

Investors said construction of the resort, on 226 hectares on the South-Western end of New Providence, was expected to begin immediately.



PM urges united front

Taking advantage of the 29th Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC) being held in Grand Bahama, Prime Minister Perry Christie urged the tourism ministers at the official opening Sunday night, to forge a united front to have the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) postponed another two years.

Thirty-three countries are represented at this year's conference which is being held at Westin Grand Bahama Island at Our Lucaya Beach and Golf Resort under the following theme: Cooperation Innovation, Rejuvenation: Creating a Brand New Caribbean Prime Minister Chiristie expressed how happy The Bahamas is to play host to the 29th annual tourism conference.

Before officially declaring the event open, the prime minister expressed concern about the new US initiative which is expected to come into effect on January 8, 2007.



RockResorts gets Bahamas bid

RockResorts, the luxury hotel subsidiary of Vail Resorts Inc., announced Thursday it has been awarded the management contract for the new $700 million Rum Cay Resort Marina in the Bahamas.

The 870-acre Rum Cay will become RockResorts' first international property. It is being developed by Nassau, Bahamas-based Montana Holdings.

RockResorts will manage the hotel and spa facilities, along with a marina village and golf facility.

"We continue to focus on resorts in and around our ski resorts, but we're also looking to extend that reach to other unique settings," said said Jeffrey Jones, senior executive vice president at Vail Resorts. "This is one of those."

The Rum Cay hotel, which will open in 2009, will feature approximately 100 rooms and 80 fractional-ownership villas.
