Cayman sevens in action

This Saturday and Sunday November 11th and 12th the Cayman Islands National Sevens team sponsored by bmobile will participate in the NAWIRA sevens in Barbados.

The squad has been selected after several weeks of training and from the Maples and Calder National Sevens Academy, as well as the on perfomaces at the Cable and Wireless Summer Sevens Series.

Last year the bmobile team finished seventh overall in the tournament and hopes to finish in the top three this time around. Cayman finds itself in the same pool at Jamaica who won last years tournament, Mexico who play in the World Sevens Series, Bahamas who defeated Cayman last year and the Dominican Republic who Cayman beat handily last year, so it is a tough pool.

The Bmobile Cayman side has to win one of it’s first two games to have a chance of moving into the cup rounds on Sunday as they play first Jamaica and then Mexico followed by Bahamas and finally Dominican Republic.

Swimming for Survival

Pristine beaches line the shore and the sparkling blue water encircles the coastline as young DJ dangles his feet over his father's small boat. Gazing down, the water shifts in mesmerising waves when out of nowhere a large school of the Nassau grouper dash by – the sunlight emphasising the colourful designs on their bodies. In a daze the little boy stares in awe as his thoughts race over his plans to one day become a man of the high seas.

But will these dreams of his ever come true?

According to some local and international experts, unless drastic steps are taken to prevent overfishing, the Nassau grouper and many other marine species may become commercially extinct in just a few short years. This has led the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources to take a bold but controversial step to extend this year's grouper ban by one month.

Quietly protecting the secrets

If there is a poster child for the U.S. Marine Corps, it might well be Gerhardt Buckentin. At age 25, he's nearly finished with his third tour of duty. He's served as a brig guard in Okinawa, Japan, an embassy guard in Moscow, Russia, Nassau, Bahamas and most recently, in Baghdad, Iraq. He's traveled the world, yet he seems innocently small town. His words are chosen selectively, if not conservatively. He'll release only as much as the person he's talking to probably needs to know; carefully calculated. At Mayer Lutheran High School, he was considered a shy kid, not somebody who sought the attention of others. It's a personality trait that has probably served him well as a guard with the Marines. Two weeks ago he set foot on U.S. soil for the first time in months, only to learn that he will be the featured guest of the New Germany Legion, which is getting ready to celebrate its 60th anniversary Nov.

He gave actress special treatment

AN under-fire government minister, a paternity suit, a tragic death and litigation over a US900,000 ($1.4m) house - the Bahamas may wish it had never offered refuge to US actress Anna Nicole Smith, given the trouble that she has brought with her.
