Slow and sunny mode leaves you free to savor life on Eleuthera

ELEUTHERA, Bahamas -- Eleuthera is a slender wisp of land shaped like a mermaid's tail to the south , and topped by a scattering of small islands and coral reefs to the north. In between are roughly 100 miles of serenity.

What draws people to Eleuthera? Although it is only 20 minutes by air from the regional hub of Nassau, the answer is not bright lights, brand-name high-rise hotels, or large-scale resorts. Those kinds of facilities don't exist here. Nor are there strip malls, chain stores, traffic, or stoplights.

Instead, we found a slower pace and a focus on simpler things. As Kirk D. Aulin, managing director of The Cove resort, says, ``Eleuthera is a place to get your life back."

The island has been lightly touched by the modern era and much of its character reflects its history.

'Rockefellers' are back

The $700 million Rum Cay Resort Marina will be managed by the luxury hotel company RockResorts as it begins its three-phase process of building up the biggest marina that The Bahamas has ever housed.

The joint venture will bring the Rockefeller family businesses back to where it began: in the West Indies. The management of Rum Cay Resort Marina (RCRM) will be the first international addition to the brand since the company was purchased by another resort called the Vail Resorts, back in 2001.

"Rum Cay will be a unique, industry-leading project in The Bahamas, and RockResorts' and Vail Resorts' expertise not only in managing luxury hotels but also in consulting on development phases," said John Mittens, CEO of Montana Holdings Limited (MHT), the Nassau-based development company of RCRM.

Interview with Amber Raleigh, President of Effortless Vacations

Last week we spoke with Amber Raleigh, President and founder of Effortless Vacations, about her luxury travel service. Raleigh (pictured, right) has a veteran's point of view – she has 10 years of experience in the industry, most of those spent with Exclusive Resorts. She left Exclusive Resorts and founded Effortless Vacations in July of 2006. She has 15 clients so far and focuses on vacations in Colorado, Hawaii and Mexico with plans to expand to Florida and the Bahamas soon.

The basic idea behind Effortless Vacations is a comprehensive travel planning, booking and luxury concierge service. The company serves individuals and corporate clients, and is getting into destination wedding planning as well.

They charge a rate of $200 per hour for all the combined travel consulting.

Couples go on 'procreation vacations'

When Lucinda Hughes heard she would have to drink sea moss elixir while vacationing in the Bahamas, she was certain it would make her sick. Sure enough, three months later, Hughes is very sick - every morning - and expecting her first baby in April. She got pregnant after she and her husband went on a three-day Procreation Vacation at a resort on Grand Bahama Island.

It's part of a trend in which hotels around the world are luring couples who are trying to have a baby. Resorts are offering on-site sex doctors, romantic advice and exotic food and drink calculated to put lovers in the mood and hasten the pitter-patter of little feet.

Even some obstetricians are promoting the trend. Dr. Jason James of Miami said he often encourages couples trying to have a baby to sneak away for a few days, and he often sees it work.
