RockResorts gets Bahamas bid

RockResorts, the luxury hotel subsidiary of Vail Resorts Inc., announced Thursday it has been awarded the management contract for the new $700 million Rum Cay Resort Marina in the Bahamas.

The 870-acre Rum Cay will become RockResorts' first international property. It is being developed by Nassau, Bahamas-based Montana Holdings.

RockResorts will manage the hotel and spa facilities, along with a marina village and golf facility.

"We continue to focus on resorts in and around our ski resorts, but we're also looking to extend that reach to other unique settings," said said Jeffrey Jones, senior executive vice president at Vail Resorts. "This is one of those."

The Rum Cay hotel, which will open in 2009, will feature approximately 100 rooms and 80 fractional-ownership villas.

Montana Holdings Ltd., the Nassau-based development company of Rum Cay Resort Marina, has selected RockResorts to manage the resort operations on the $700 million, 870-acre multi-use luxury resort / residential / marina development on Rum Cay Island, Bahamas. RockResorts, a luxury hotel company headquartered in Broomfield,Colorado, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vail Resorts, Inc. (NYSE: MTN) and operates resorts in five US states. In addition to managing the luxury hotel and spa facilities, RockResorts has been engaged to manage the marina village, golf facility, certain residential rental programs and one or more private membership clubs. RockResorts will provide technical consulting and marketing services during the development and pre-opening phases of the Rum Cay project. The branding of Rum Cay Resort Marina in the Bahamas puts RockResorts back into the tropical island region where the brand was originally created in 1956 by Laurance Rockefeller, with the development of Caneel Bay on St.

'Rockefellers' are back

The $700 million Rum Cay Resort Marina will be managed by the luxury hotel company RockResorts as it begins its three-phase process of building up the biggest marina that The Bahamas has ever housed.

The joint venture will bring the Rockefeller family businesses back to where it began: in the West Indies. The management of Rum Cay Resort Marina (RCRM) will be the first international addition to the brand since the company was purchased by another resort called the Vail Resorts, back in 2001.

"Rum Cay will be a unique, industry-leading project in The Bahamas, and RockResorts' and Vail Resorts' expertise not only in managing luxury hotels but also in consulting on development phases," said John Mittens, CEO of Montana Holdings Limited (MHT), the Nassau-based development company of RCRM.

Business briefs, October 27

The Securities and Exchange Commission has launched an investigation of 27 mutual-fund companies that the agency says have accepted kickbacks totaling hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years.

The investigation centers on alleged arrangements in which independent contractors agreed to pay rebates to mutual-fund companies in order to win lucrative contracts for jobs such as producing shareholder reports and prospectuses. The probe stems from a $21.4 million settlement the SEC reached last month with Bisys Fund Services Inc., an administrative-services provider owned by Bisys Group Inc.

Gateway to review investors' proposal

Gateway Inc. said Thursday it will review a proposal from activist investors who are pressuring the computer maker to add three new board members and change other governance practices.

Boundaries have yet to be decided

The Boundaries Commiss-ion is still locked in meetings about how to slice up segments of the island before a general election is called. The Guardian has learned, however, that no official report will be delivered until next February.

"Remember that there has been an enormous amount of growth in southwest New Providence, and if there are any new seats, they will probably come in that area, but the Boundary Commission still has a lot of work to do, and we may not hear from them until next year February," a government source told The Guardian on Friday.

The Constitution of The Bahamas provides for the appointment of a Commission to review the number and boundaries of electoral constituencies into which The Bahamas is divided, at intervals of not more than five years.
