Just imagine … well, maybe not
CAMROSE, Alta. — Darrell Thompson's hands were shaking so badly it took him 20 minutes to dial the phone number of his best friend and shift partner from work.“Slim, we won 'er," Thompson frantically blurted into the phone.
“What?" Perry Mayne asked as he sat at home thumbing through a stack of Lotto 6/49 tickets, comparing their numbers to the winning digits printed in the morning newspaper. The record $54-million jackpot was the talk of the country.
Thompson had been scanning through a second bundle of tickets, all of them bought as part of a friendly lottery pool among co-workers at Viking Energy southeast of Camrose. Thompson and Mayne, who had worked at the oilfield plant for more than 40 years combined, picked up the tickets at various convenience stores and gas stations on behalf of the group.

Virginia was only 15-15 overall and 7-9 in the ACC last season, but it far exceeded expectations for Coach Dave Leitao's first season.After all, the Cavaliers were picked for a last-place finish in the ACC. But that was last season. Now, the expectations are higher.
Virginia returns all five starters plus two other lettermen who contributed and has added five scholarship players. The team should have improved depth as it moves from University Hall into the new John Paul Jones Arena.
"When you take over a program, one of the immediate things you have to do is create an identity," Leitao said. "You have to look like something, and I thought we started to head in that direction in terms of having people, either our opponents or other coaches or our fan base, understand that if you're going to play Virginia, they're going to have to play the game a certain way.
British Sea Power to Tour with the Killers
UK drama club presidents British Sea Power have announced a short string of tour dates as openers for current Top 40 alt-pop kings the Killers. British Sea Power continue to support their sophomore album Open Season, released last Spring, while Brandon Flowers and co. recently issued an expanded U.S. edition of their best-selling debut LP Hot Fuss.The bands will kick off the brief outing at the end of this month, with stops at the Across the Narrows and Download festivals. The New York Dolls, Interpol, Tegan and Sara, the Ordinary Boys, and Lake Trout will join them on Staten Island on October 1 for the former, and Modest Mouse, the Arcade Fire, Doves, Mindless Self Indulgence, H.I.M., the Lovemakers, and Ambulance Ltd. will play Mountain View, Calif., on October 8 at the latter. Note to Brandon Flowers: Don't forget to stock up with your Avon lady!
