SDSU women receive votes in coaches' poll

For the first time since moving to NCAA Division I, the South Dakota State University women's basketball team is receiving votes in a national poll.

The Jackrabbits, 3-0 this season, received three votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll released Tuesday afternoon.

Since moving up to Division I status at the start of the 2004-05 season, SDSU has compiled a 27-16 record against D-I opponents, including a 67-63 victory over then-19th-ranked Southern California on Nov. 17.

SDSU returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Junkanoo Jam in the Bahamas. The Jackrabbits will take on Virginia, which is receiving votes in both the coaches' poll and The Associated Press poll, at 1 p.m. Eastern Time (noon Central) on Friday. Fifteenth-ranked Baylor (Texas) is a potential Jackrabbit opponent on Saturday.

Women ready to spend another holiday break in the sun

While their families are eating turkey and sharing stories over Thanksgiving dinner, members of the Terrapin women's basketball team will be miles away, with much more on its plate.

The Terps travel to Grand Bahama Island with their second family - their teammates - to play Gardner-Webb and either Mississippi or Northwestern as part of the two-night Junkanoo Jam tournament.

Don't feel bad for the Terps though; they still get a couple of days off in the sun to enjoy a catamaran boat ride and snorkeling in the Bahamas.

"Obviously in the Bahamas you get some great scenery and relaxing times as well," coach Brenda Frese said. "It's a great balance of both [vacation and work]. Once we start playing games Friday and Saturday, we're all business. But definitely, it's a low key approach to enjoy the time we're out there."

Last year, the Terps traveled to the U.S.

Are you ready for the Junkanoo Jam?

Perhaps one of the biggest NCAA basketball Tourna-ments outside of the United States, is set to be staged here in Grand Bahama in just a matter of weeks.

The fourth annual Junka-noo Jam, Grand Bahama's Women's College Basketball Tournament will take place November 21-26 at the St. Georges gym.

According to organisers this year's Tournament looks to be even more exciting than the previous three years.

"This will be the biggest one that we've had thus far," said David 'Stretch' Morley, president of the Bahamas Basketball Federation and visionary for the tournament.

"This Tournament will attract more visitors to the island than ever before."

And the reason for that is simple – when you have teams like Maryland (2006 National Champions) and Baylor (last year's NCAA National Champions) coming to Grand Bahama, you can always expect a large following.

Bahamas women's conference receives worldwide TV boost

The Bahamas recently received major television exposure through the promotion of the upcoming "First Ladies First: The Quiet Whispers" women's conference on the Trinity Broad-casting Network (TBN), the world's largest religious network and America's most watched faith channel.

Andria Hall, former CNN News Anchor and President of the New Jersey-based SpeakEasy M.E.D.I.A. communications firm – which will produce the Caribbean conference from November 30 through December 3, 2006 in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island – recently appeared on TBN's "Praise the Lord" programme, and is encouraging people of faith to visit Freeport to experience God in a deeper way.

Hall wants to encourage women to serve God in both traditional and non-traditional venues by strengthening their faith and sharpening their leadership skills.
