Dolphin at a Glance

The dolphin is the wood duck of pelagic fishes, so spectacularly colorful that it seems impossible it could have evolved by accident. The back and head are iridescent, glowing neon blue and chartreuse green. The sides and belly are gold, sprinkled with bright blue spots. And, like some other pelagics, the fish has the ability to "light up" with shimmering waves of color across its body, almost as if its skin were embedded with moving lights.

In fact, biologists say the fish's color is the result not only of pigment, but of microscopic structures in the skin, which the fish can manipulate to change its color. The color changes could have evolved for spawning selection, or perhaps as a camouflage when approached by predators, as with many bottom creatures. In any case, the spectacular color in life leaves no doubt when a dolphin dies; the skin almost instantly turns an ugly, blotchy gray-silver or dull yellow.

Ministry concerned over deaths involving the bends

The deaths of three fishermen in the Family Islands over the last month, have sparked concern among officials in the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources.

The ministry is particularly concerned over the incidence of divers suffering from the "bends" or decompression illness, which caused the deaths of the three fishermen.

Bahamian fishermen, with an average age of 31 years, make up about 40 per cent of patients suffering from the bends, who are seen at the Accident and Emergency Department of The Princess Margaret Hospital.

At times, the bends can be a fatal disorder that is marked by neuralgic pains and paralysis, distress in breathing, and often collapse, caused by the release of gas bubbles in tissue upon too rapid decrease in air pressure, after a remaining in a compressed atmosphere.

The United Nations must protect human rights

Three weeks ago I had the pleasure of traveling to England along with my mother, "Ma" Ruby Percentie for her Investiture at Buckingham Palace with her Order of The British Empire Award. As a part of my touring and things to do in London, I attended one of those infamous no-holds-barred speeches at The Speaker's Corner at Hyde Park. Thanks to The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is a universal right around the world that every individual is entitled. At Speaker's Corner, one can voice their opinion on any subject matter, irrespective of who is offended once they follow the three basic traditional and conventional rules.

1). You cannot insult the Monarchy.

2). You cannot beg for money.

3). You cannot incite a riot.

Needless to say, persons who are thinned skinned or sensitive to such social issues as race, politics, homosexuality, would be advised not to attend these speeches as their blood will be quick to boil!

Later that evening, another related and significant event took place.

Officer shot in South Andros

A team of Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) officers are searching for a gunman on the Island of South Andros, after he fired several shots at an off-duty police officer stationed in its north-eastern district.

According to Inspector Walter Evans, Press Liaison Officer for the RBPF, the shooting took place just 48 hours ago.

"On Sunday afternoon an off-duty police officer, stationed in South Andros, was approached by a member of the public who was making a complaint," explained Insp Evans. "The officer upon receiving this information, proceeded to address the matter."

Insp Evans added that as the officer was speaking to the complainant, the suspect opened fire. "The suspect, who was driving a vehicle, saw the complainant in the vicinity of the police and others," he said.
