I snapped this shot from my hammock on the beach in Tulum, Mexico, last year. It was midday in mid-October in the middle of the worst hurricane season on record.Between storms -- even in the worst years -- hurricane season in the tropics can be strung with sparkling sun-studded days. Though most travelers will choose to stay out of hurricane season's capricious -- and potentially dangerous -- way, others might want to risk the threat of inclement weather for the benefit of the affordable, crowd-free vacations that are available this time of year. The North Atlantic hurricane season spans six months, from June 1 to Nov.
Two-day workshop focuses on English as a second languageIn an attempt to improve English Language programmes in schools, the Department of Education yesterday began a two-day English as a Second Language (ESL) workshop for Grand Bahama's teachers.Over 40 teachers from 11 schools across the island participated in the six-hour development sessions, which took place in the ballroom of the Our Lucaya Resort. Teachers were guided through an all-day session on how to teach four linguistic skills in the same order that natural language and learning occurs. The professional sessions included an upgrade of the English language for teachers in schools that carry a high percentage of non-English speaking students. With an increasing number of these students who come from non-English speaking homes or English language deficient environments, some teachers thought the workshop would help execute successful programmes in schools.
Singapore's Sentosa seeks Monaco glitzSINGAPORE (Reuters) - Turning Singapore's southern island of Sentosa into Asia's glitziest address could be quite a challenge. The British colonial rulers used Sentosa as a fort, while the Japanese carried out massacres on its beaches during World War Two. After independence in 1965, Singapore turned the island into a much-ridiculed tourist site. Now Sentosa -- about three times the area of Monaco -- is being developed to be Asia's answer to the French Riviera and a hang-out for the rich and famous. Sentosa's development is part of Singapore's wider economic makeover. As manufacturers shift jobs to low-cost rivals such as China, the city-state of 4.4 million people will have to rely more on services such as private banking and tourism for growth. Singapore is already Asia's leading private banking center, catering to wealthy Chinese, Taiwanese, Indonesians and Indians.
