Inmates get qualifications

Fifty prisoners have proudly completed special training courses within Fox Hill prison and graduated with distinction.

The inmates were all from the Correctional Training Institute at Her Majesty's Prison, Fox Hill, equipped and now have educational certificates which should help them gain employment when they are released.

Chief Officer Murphy from the prison's education department informed The Guardian that certificates were offered in areas such as basic computer (Windows and Microsoft Word), the culinary arts, small engine repair, entrepreneurship skills, welding, and ceramics.

To top it all off, the inmates were congratulated on their achievements when they were addressed by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Jones Communications International Limited, Wendall K.

Fixing Cuba's Bad Rep

Bahamians should know more about Cuba but they should not be influenced by critics who appear to be driven by United States propaganda, and I believe that certain news media organisations are misleading the Bahamian public about my country.

Journalism should be about the truth, honesty, objectiveness, and non partisanship! Otherwise, some may think they are journalists. But they are not. And people who are not illiterate at the end of the road will make their own judgements. Nobody can believe that everything coming from a country, in this case Cuba, is bad as certain media in The Bahamas wants to make it.

One example I can give concerns the coverage of medical matters in Cuba. A front-page article dealing with alleged complications involving 17 patients who travelled to my country for operations.

Floridians have fun, will travel for holiday

Millions of Floridians will board planes and hit the roads this holiday weekend, despite rising prices in gasoline and airfare. By ROBIN PEGUERO AND KATHLEEN McGRORY rpeguero@MiamiHerald.com

The three Tenreiro kids lounged at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Saturday, after their holiday trip to the Bahamas hit unexpected turbulence.

The youngsters -- Joanisa, 17; Kristin, 14 and Zoe, 12 -- had left behind travel documents at their Naples home, temporarily jeopardizing their trip to join some 40 family members in Freeport to celebrate Independence Day and their grandmother's 70th birthday.

''When our mom was young, she used to go to the Bahamas,'' said Kristin Tenreiro. ``We're just going to see how it was when she was young.''

Protect natural assets as the economy develops

I thank you for the fine recent articles by Mr Huggins on development in the Bahamas calling for an approach that recognises the need to integrate concern for the environment along with concern for a healthier economy. I have been following developments in particular in Guana Cay when I first learned about the plans for the large resort by the Discovery Land Company.

I have been most interested in how citizens and officials concerned about such projects can have the earliest input as well as access to needed information to protect the larger public interest, a role the Sierra Club has played for over 100 years in protecting the larger public interest in securing the important natural resource base that sustains our livelihoods and protects the many important values of our wild places and respective inhabitants.

Small and micro-enterprises were the main beneficiaries of a multi-million dollar fund, set up by the Stanford Group of Companies in partnership with the government of St. Kitts/Nevis and managed by the indigenous Development Bank of St. Kitts/Nevis.

Details of the $10 million fund and how it would work were provided during a ceremony last Friday to officially launch the “Empowerment for Ownership: Small Business Initiative" programme.

At The Half: Proms Mark Important Transition To Adulthood

It's prom time again. I call it the silly season because, in my mind, many kids and their parents take on a peculiar kind of madness which drives them to embarrassing materialistic excesses and public spectacle in order for the children to attend the traditional high school prom. .
